Oil by Shirley Kirkcaldy
Up on Zennor Head
I am a contemporary landscape artist living on Dartmoor which, together with my familiarity and love of the Devon and Cornish coastlines, greatly informs my work.
What I experience when in the landscape inspires an explorative approach to my practice which is both experimental yet grounded and coherent.
Colour, contrast, light and texture are elements that feature significantly and form the foundation for what I aim to capture on canvas - an 'intuitive response to a place and time'.
Working expressively in a variety of media, images that exist in actuality are transposed as reflections of what I see and feel on location.
Paintings are developed from the prolific drawings and visual notes I make, which become etched in memory and, in the studio, these combine with materials to explore ideas created.
By subtracting or abstracting information, final images move further away from documentary and towards anonymity, thus, I prefer to invite the viewer to form their own interpretation whilst always conveying a personal significance.
Painted in oil, worked from numerous sketches and visual notes made on location at Zennor In Cornwall. Heavily textured, layered and glazed.
