  • CAMP KINections at Studio KIND

Arriving at Studio KIND CAMP KINections at Studio KIND: A Day of Connection in Barnstaple On Friday 15th August , I travelled with CAMP co-director Mark Leahy  and CAMP coordinator Anna Gilroy  to Barnstaple for the first in-person group session of the CAMP KINections artist development programme. After several months of online activity, it was a pleasure to finally bring the two cohorts – emerging rural artists and Torbay-based practitioners – together under one roof to share their experiences, plan the next stages of the project, and do a little bit of evaluation. We were hosted for the day by artist and Studio KIND founding director Laura Porter , who welcomed us in the setting of their new exhibition Automatic Change Giver  by Stuart Robinson . This was an inspiring backdrop for the day: an ambitious, playful show exploring seaside nostalgia and memory through sculptural installation; nothing better than being surrounded by creativity to keep energy levels up! Meeting of Cohorts The morning gave both cohorts the chance to connect in person, strengthening the experience this cross-regional programme. Together, we reviewed ideas for the exhibition component of KINections and took time to look at some of the evaluation processes. It was great to see how the programme is already shaping the artists individual approaches to their practice and it reaffirmed the value of creating these peer networks; big hats off to Mark and the wider CAMP network for making it all possible. In the afternoon, we were joined by wider CAMP members for a talk from Laura Porter , who generously shared insights into the challenges and rewards of running an artist-led venue. Her reflections on the development of Studio KIND, from its founding in 2020 to its recent relocation to The Corn Store at Barnstaple’s historic Pannier Market, offered valuable lessons in resilience, vision, and sustaining community-driven practice. KINections Programme Banner Launch Evening The day closed with the launch of Stuart Robinson’s exhibition, which a handful of us were pleased to attend. Robinson’s practice, rooted in sculptural installation and performative elements, engages with personal and shared histories, offering playful but poignant narratives. Automatic Change Giver  draws on childhood seaside holidays and the landscapes, objects, and rituals that define them – bright colours, wordplay, and familiar motifs inviting audiences into conversations about memory, joy, and loss. Stuart Robinson's Exhibition Reflections For me, it was a rich and rewarding day. Travelling up by train with Anna was a really pleasant way to approach the session, and arriving in Barnstaple I was struck by the vibrancy of the town and its cultural scene. Meeting Laura in person, seeing the new Studio KIND premises, and hearing the artists’ reflections on KINections was another great reminder of just how exciting this programme is, and the value CAMP is bringing to its members across Devon and Cornwall. About CAMP CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Platform)  is a member-led support and professional development network for artists, arts workers, and creatives across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. CAMP promotes doing, making, and sharing contemporary art through a programme of workshops, mentoring, and opportunities for collaboration. About KINections KINections  is a 15-month professional development opportunity led by CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Platform CIC) , an artist-led membership organisation for creatives in Devon and Cornwall. Starting in April 2025, the project will work with Devon-based artist duo LOW PROFILE  and Artizan Gallery, Torbay , alongside partners Thelma Hulbert Gallery  (Honiton), Fish Factory  (Penryn) and The Plough Arts Centre  (Great Torrington), to deliver a programme of support, training, and networking for rurally based emerging artists and Torbay artists. The project is funded by Arts Council England , The Fenton Trust , and CAMP. About Studio KIND Founded in 2020, Studio KIND  is a community interest company presenting ambitious and diverse programmes of contemporary art. Recently relocated to The Corn Store in Barnstaple’s historic Pannier Market, Studio KIND supports both local and national artists, with a mission to raise the profile of contemporary art in North Devon and to create an inclusive, dynamic cultural hub. • Sink or Swim: Exhibition by Art for Social Change Collective

Sink or Swim Sink or Swim Exhibition by Art for Social Change Collective The Projection Room, Paignton Private View: Saturday, 23rd August, 6-8pm Exhibition Continues: until Tuesday, 26th August 25 Contact: lottie.bolster@gmail.com Instagram: @art_for_social_change Sink or Swim is a multidisciplinary exhibition presented by the Art for Social Change collective, held at the Projection Room, Paignton. The show explores urgent issues surrounding marine degradation and the ecological vulnerability of water. Featuring photography, ceramics, glasswork, screenprints, watercolours, digital projection and live performance, the exhibition invites the public to reflect on our evolving, and often endangered relationship with the ocean.  In the lead-up to the exhibition , local artist Lottie Bolster has been hosting participatory sessions reflecting on fish & chip shops in a speculative future when fish is just a memory. What happens when the fish are gone? Lottie is inviting the public to contribute and share their story either in person at Paignton Library on Tuesday 5th August, 3pm or by email lottie.bolster@gmail.com .  The Art for Social Change collective brings together artists from diverse disciplines and backgrounds who are united by a shared commitment to challenging dominant narratives, provoking social awareness, and fostering connection through creative expression. Formed during the 2021 Artquest Arts for Social Change Salon , the group has since evolved into a supportive network nurturing socially engaged practices. Sink or Swim marks the collective’s first public exhibition, a convergence of artistic voices working at the intersection of the personal, political and planetary. The works in the show confront fragility, invite reflection, and ask: will we sink or swim?  Exhibiting artists Lottie Bolster, Julie Light, Katherine Masters, Aishling Muller, Agata Nowak, and Kayleigh Peters .  Lottie Bolster | Artist and Mental Health Advocate  Lottie is a multidisciplinary artist whose work challenges (mis)perceptions.  Lottie uses storytelling to prompt audiences to question the mental frameworks that shape how we see the world. A graduate of Central Saint Martins (MA Art & Science, 2019), she has exhibited in the UK and internationally, including at CERN, Tate Modern, and Somerset House.  Website: www.lottiebolster.com   Instagram: @lottie_bolster   Julie Light | Artist and Sculptor  Sculptural Explorations of Body and Health  Julie is a sculptor working primarily with glass to explore human and creature form, health, and hybridity. Her sculptures visualise the intersection of human and non-human bodies, illness, and imagined transformations, asking viewers to reconsider their perceptions of health and vulnerability.  Website: www.julielight.co.uk   Instagram: @julielightglass Katherine Masters | Conceptual Artist  Coastal Sustainability and the Human Condition  Katherine examines the natural world’s fragility, focusing on coastal sustainability and environmental responsibility. She explores the relationship between texture and colour while addressing the pressing concerns of ecological change through a multidisciplinary practice.  Website: www.katherinemasters.com   Instagram: @katherinemasters.artist   Aishling Muller | Digital Media & Performance Artist  Ecological Grief & Inner Transformation  Irish neurodiverse artist Aishling Muller explores the parallels between environmental collapse and personal metamorphosis. Working with lens-based media and performance, she documents the melting glaciers of Greenland and creates symbolic self-portraits that reflect cycles of loss, resilience, and rebirth. Her work here considers water not just as crisis, but as carrier of memory, emotion, and planetary change.  Website: www.lifeschanginglandscape.com   Instagram: @aishlingmuller   Agata Nowak | Cross-Disciplinary Research-Based Artist  Human and Non Human  Agata weaves themes of resilience, and belonging into her research-based practice. Working with strands of basalt fiber, she created screen print drawings that echo the silent chemical exchange between oceanic crust and the ocean. Her work brings attention to the agency of matter and the quiet, ongoing exchanges that drive transformation beyond human perception.  Website: www.agatanowak.squarespace.com Instagram: @agatanowakdesign   Kayleigh Peters | Multidisciplinary Artist  Health, Protest, and Lived Experience  Kayleigh is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores themes of health, protest, and lived experience. Working across textiles, ceramics, performance and participatory art, she investigates the ways in which craft can serve as a vehicle for storytelling and activism. Her work engages with historical and contemporary narratives, inviting audiences to reflect on issues of care, resilience, and systemic change.  Website: www.kayleigh-peters.com   Instagram: @kayleighpeters_artist #LottieBolster #KayleighPeters #AgataNowak #AishlingMuller #KatherineMasters #JulieLight #SinkOrSwim #GuestBlog #Exhibition

  • Revisiting Graham’s Garden - Frances Mason

Walking through the gates of the Italian garden at Great Ambrook I am surrounded by a familiar sense of mystery, of ancient secrets linking this place to the people who inhabited it more than 100 years ago. It’s almost a year since I was last here and new trailing rosemary creeps across repaired pathways, part of the ongoing process of sensitive renovation and replanting. At the Summerhouse the historian Jeremy Treglown brings the garden’s creator and his companions back to life in the space they enjoyed all those years ago.  These are the people who populated my final MA Illustration project “Graham’s Garden” shown in an exhibition at Artizan Gallery, Torquay in March 2024.   The garden’s story still remains largely unwritten, but its different settings provide stages for the imagination. A creative opportunity it’s hard to resist! The current custodians of the garden, with the help of a team of incredible volunteers, are creating an inclusive space in which to socialise, learn and spend time with nature and they are generously inviting local people in to develop some of these opportunities. As a result, Zo Copeland, a local writer and poet who is currently running creative writing courses in Paignton is collaborating with me, an illustrator, to deliver a creative writing and drawing workshop in the garden on 21st September 2024 between 11am to 2pm. The garden is not open to the public, so this is an opportunity to visit this inspiring place as we wander through the gardens making words and pictures. Everyone is welcome and no previous experience is required. • Maker Takeovers: Call for Artists - Delamore Arts 2025

Delamore Arts X Artizan Collective Call for Makers, Artist and Artisans Artizan Collective and Delamore Arts are seeking applications from artists and makers to take on stalls in our small “Maker Pop-ups” space, part of the new Delamore Arts Courtyard programme. This is a selective call to which we are inviting applications. For full opportunity details and terms and conditions, please review the call document here . Last Few Spaces Remaining Overview Delamore Delamore arts is an annual month-long exhibition that has been running successfully for just over 20 years. It attracts artists and visitors from across the UK with all works selected by a panel of judges to ensure and maintain a high standard of work. Whilst its focus initially was on sculptural works that are placed within the grounds and the house, 2D works have become an important part of the offer and adorn the walls in the main house salon style to compliment a supporting collection of interior 3D works. Delamore regularly sees repeat visitors for whom this event is part of their arts calendar and many of those visitors come with the intent to buy. There is a café on site so most visitors will spend several hours and fully explore all that is on offer. Proceeds from the exhibition support a designated charity that is selected each year by Delamore. Artizan For the month of May, we move to Delamore Estate and support this fantastic annual showcase with our own curated offer. Contemporary British Printmakers and The Kiln Room will provide two unique exhibition additions to this year’s programme, with the rest of the courtyard spaces being used to develop new programming offers including workshops, demonstrations and maker takeovers. Maker Takeovers Offer The Stalls is a new offering that will sit alongside the already successful programming that has run from this section of Delamore Arts for several years. In this new space we are offering fair style stands for individual makers and artists to take on for mid-week and weekend blocks. • Artizan Women’s Open 2025 Call

Artizan Women’s Open The Artizan Women’s Open Exhibition has become an established feature of our programme, providing an annual platform to celebrate and amplify the voices of women in the arts. Each year, we continue to reflect on themes of visibility, recognition, and equity, inviting women artists to share their diverse perspectives and talents. For 2025, we’re delighted to once again host this vibrant exhibition at our Fleet Walk venue, showcasing a range of works across disciplines and styles. We anticipate participation from 30 to 40 artists, with each contributor invited to submit up to four pieces. Launching on International Women’s Day , this year’s exhibition will further our commitment to addressing the challenges women face in the art world while celebrating their incredible contributions. As we prepare for this year’s exhibition, it’s essential to acknowledge the wider contexts shaping gender conversations globally. Recent shifts in reproductive rights legislation in the United States have reignited debates about bodily autonomy and the control women have over their own futures. Meanwhile, the #MeToo movement continues to reveal systemic issues of harassment and inequity across creative industries, calling for deeper cultural shifts and accountability. And the recent legal ruling allowing the "Ladies Lounge" exhibit at Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) to reopen highlights the power of art to challenge and provoke conversations about historic exclusions and contemporary equity. Against this backdrop, we continue to offer the Women’s Open Exhibition as an inclusive, celebratory platform that uplifts women’s perspectives, fosters dialogue, and highlights the enduring value of their contributions to the arts.
