The Performance of the Paper - Trace of a Selfie
Samuel Richardson
Exploring the notion of value in perception, an investigation into the fundamentals of representation creates a catalyst for experimental photography that sits on the edges of established practice. Intrigued by the phenomenon of the digital self, a vital part of the artwork is integrating the smartphone or referencing it to connote the assimilation it has within western society and its power over perception and value in the modern image.
The metaphysical search for truth in perception is researched alongside this process, to push against the rigid frameworks in which the self is represented. The photographs produced are often analogue, with an emphasis on unorthodox technique, one might call them cameraless photographs, or photograms. The Process is on the verge of immediacy, yet vulnerable in its physicality, providing the possibility of representing the superficial self-image from a new angle. This is achieved within a custom dark room. Testing the limits of photographic materials, exaggerating its weaknesses, and disregarding established processes, stimulates creative freedom in which the material dictates the results of an experience after the initiation of human interaction.
One can find that through negating figurative permanence and representation through not fixing materials: spectacles, anomalies, and surprises which are indicative of human experience can be realised.
