In Last Place is First Place

I'm a freelance Illustrator and exhibiting artist based in Plymouth currently studying a masters in Illustration at Plymouth College of Art.
In my short time as an Illustrator I've worked with various individuals to produce editorial illustrations to accompany pieces of creative writing, articles, poems etc, while exhibiting work across the South West.
I've always gravitated towards work that sparks curiosity in the viewer and I try to take this on board with my Illustrations, deliberately trying to hide the deeper reflections that on the surface looks fun and light-hearted but on further inspection echoes much darker subject matter.
This was an illustration inspired by a documentary I was watching during my evenings that delved into the human mind, namely depression and hypo-mania. What I found interesting is that it treated them as separate moods, however, I feel these can operate together. This wwas visualised to me by the cheetah being the fastest animal on earth and represents my high moods when I truly beleive that I'm the best but the title of the illustration shows the contradiction and that deep down I beleive I'm actually last. In a way this was an attempt and trying to visualise my high and low moods and how they can operate simultaneously and not simply one at a time.
