  • RECORDING: For the Love of Seagrass! - an open conversation

For the Love of Seagrass was an open conversation hosted by Gill Melling as part of the Geopark Artist Residency Programme. The below recording is an audio record of the conversation. About Gill's Residency Cultural Entanglements in Marine Environments Artist Gill Melling continues her exploration of the human impact and reliance on marine biodiversity, through the lens of communities and environments of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark. Her resultant residency art series will evolve through local conversations and observations, creating mixed media “entanglements” combining reclaimed, “natural” and human processed materials. The Geopark designation offers a unique canvas, drawing together a geography that includes Marine Conservation Zones with their precious seagrass beds, that must share space with a fishing heritage that includes one of the largest fisheries in the country, a leisure industry, and local residents, all reliant on these same natural resources. All of this against a backdrop of UN Sustainable Development Goals that the world as a whole struggles to achieve, and a global ecosystem dependent on local conservation. About the Geopark Residency Programme The Geopark Artist Residency programme is a series of artist residencies delivered by Artizan Collective in partnership with Torre Abbey and the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, that aims to reveal narratives about our Geopark home through the creation of four new collections of work produced by Devon based visual artists and creative professionals. • English Riviera Winter Open 2024

English Riviera Winter Open Our annual Winter Open is back and we're looking forward to Christmas on the English Riviera! As with all of our Winter Opens, we'll be celebrating the end of a wonderful year of art, and looking forward to sharing some Christmas spirit (and incredible original art) with holiday makers and bay residents. The exhibition is a tried and tested formula that we're well known for now, making us a guaranteed stop for art lovers in the area on their Christmas shopping rotation. But we know in the current climate we've got to keep things fresh for audiences and for you our artists, so there's some new stuff to expect that will be on offer this year: Studio Offer: Our studios at the Collective gallery are better than they've ever been before, with four fulltime artists and two guest printmakers sharing the space. We still have two studio spaces available and with tenancy run on a monthly rolling basis, we'd love to fill these, either with new artists looking to join us long term, or with someone just wanting to reach those Christmas audiences. Late Night Shopping: Weekly late night shopping sessions will run throughout the event. Dates are to be confirmed in consultation with other traders, but we'll be doing at least one night every week for the full run of the exhibition. Preview Prize Draw: One lucky attendee to the artist preview launch event will receive a £150.00 voucher to spend at the exhibition, and we'll be offering additional incentives to our newsletter subscribers throughout the exhibition. £250.00 English Riviera Open Award for Artists! And for the first time, we're pleased to be offering a cash prize for our English Riviera Open Awardee. This award is selected by a guest judge for their favourite work in the show, and this year that artist will walk away with a £250.00 cash prize. About the Exhibition If you've exhibited in our open exhibitions before you know the drill, but for newcomers our annual, seasonal opens are the biggest, and most ambitious visual arts showcases in South Devon, as we turn the walls of our highstreet gallery into a tapestry of original art from creatives all over the country. The exhibition is selective but open to all, with our values for the showcase being: Diversity and Variety  - we take a range of traditional and contemporary practice, selecting works that result in a showcase rich in media, subject and style; Originality and Innovation  - this isn't an exhibition that just "plays it safe", we love traditional work, but equally we want to share work with audiences that they may not find anywhere else; Quality and Talent  - we select the best to create a showcase for our audience where they can guarantee they'll be taking away collectible, original work that can't be found anywhere else. This year, we'll be celebrating 10 years of art on the English Riviera, with all proceeds from sales going toward an exciting new project for Artizan that we hope to announce soon. As with our last few open exhibitions, your fee will only be payable if you are successful in having work selected for the exhibition. We'll be taking fees at the point of submission, but if we don't accept your work on this occasion, we'll refund your fee in full. Based on interest, we have reinstated single entry submissions. Single entry submissions are charged at £15 but unfortunately are NOT  refundable. • Conversations With... Interviews at the Gallery!

This weekend and next week, we'll be filming artist interviews at the gallery and we'd love you all to come along! The interviews will form part of a series we'll be releasing next year called "Conversations With..." which will include interviews held at the gallery, as well as visits to artist studios, local exhibitions and workshops. The series is intended to give a look into the lives of the artists we work with and who are living locally in Torbay and South Devon, through a collection of informal, bite-sized videos of no more than 7 minutes. In each, we'll find out a little more about you, look at some of your work and generally have a chat about the things that matter to you as an artist. We hope that as much as anything, this will be a good opportunity for a bit of fun, a chance for you to come and join us in the gallery this festive season, have a drink on us and tell us something we don't know about you! So, if you think this is something you might like to come along for, all you need to do is drop us an email with your preferred date and then we'll arrange a time slot for you to join us. Each slot is an hour long and we'll need you to bring a piece of art to feature in the video as well as a couple of other items that we'll confirm with you. As well as this, when we release the interviews during 2018, we'll also send you the final edit for use on your own websites and social media. So, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us, there are plenty of spaces available and even if you can't make it on these two dates, let us know so we can plan something for another time! Book a space! #opportunity #interview #Artists

  • Week Three!

[Archive: Another early blog post from our original site.] Another fairly busy week in the gallery with record sales as a lady has confirmed the purchase of ‘Guernica’ by Gilly Pitman. Richard James of Circus Torbay met up in the cafe with Jay Fortune who is running the Riviera Fringe in July (5th – 12th) and has agreed that Artizan can be an associated venue for the event. Richard will do a stand up comedy workshop on the evening of the 7th. The festival will also be running a portrait competition at Living Coasts – see link for more details - http://www.rivierafringe.co.uk/open-portrait-exhibition/ . The ‘Into June' 3 week exhibition is now fully booked with the following artists taking part:- FG Davis, ‘LoopyArt’, Jenni Pentecost, Chantal Ashwell, Gesche Bueker and Marc Heaton. Once again, all local artists displaying what great talent we have here so will definitely be worth a visit. The exhibition starts on 3rd June and runs until 23rd June. Thanks to FG Davis for also promoting it on his blog for me this week: http://fgdavisblog.com/ . I am hoping to have some workshops running in June and may even have a local artist sitting in the gallery producing some work. We have our final private view tonight (Saturday) as we head into the final week of the opening exhibition at Artizan so next week will be the last chance to come and take a second look at the work on display. On sunday the gallery is closed and I have been invited over to Harbour House in Kingsbridge and Birdwood House in Totnes to take a look at some other exhibitions featuring local artists living right here on our doorstep. Who knows, I may persuade some of them to put on an exhibition here at Artizan so watch this space... #2014 #artizan #archive
