Hidden in Plain Sight
Grace Levien
I am a freelance artist living in Paignton working in traditional mediums, mainly acrylic paint and grahpite or colour pencil. My work focuses on the portrait, largely drawing inspiration from the modern popsurrealism/Lowborw art movement as well as Japanese fashion and film. Throughout my lifetime I have been inspired the Old Masters traditional works, from the Pre-Raphaelites to Caravaggio.
I enjoy creating a comtempory feel with these traditional mediums to show that traditional ways of working will always have relevance within our fast paced digital focused culture. I tend to juxtapose whimsical & fantastical subject matter with my portraits, creatiing conflicts between realism and fantasy.
This piece by Grace Levien is about the challenge of fully realising a persons true nature and reaching the thoughts and memories they hold dearest. The maze and it's creepy inhabitants may even be enough to discourage any would-be pursuer, leaving the darkest corners unexplored.
