Delamore Artist Robert Mountjoy SWAc I was born in 1950 a month or two after Terry Frost painted “A walk along the Quay’ and I grew to regard the British Modernists as integral to my cultural heritage. As a young impressionable art student in the 1970s I was taught the basics: composition, colour theory and drawing for which I am thankful. I emerged as a teacher and an abstract painter in 1972. A move back to my native Devon in 1985 resulted in a brief halt in painting. When I did begin to paint again, I painted landscapes. My abstract paintings had mostly been constructed through a response to landscape and I initially explained my new approach as ‘going back to the source’ but I liked the idea of moving from abstract painting to realism, counter to Panofsky’s model of artists’ development. From expansive landscapes I began to explore corners of rural neglect and then still life paintings involving time worn utensils. I now choose to paint simple subjects set in beams of strong light. The highlights and shadows that were abstracted in my early paintings are now appreciated for what they are. These shadows, reflections and luminosity are now the main subjects. For the most part the objects I paint now have no symbolic significance and are chosen for their colour and form. I try to render them truthfully but make adjustments for the sake of composition. I want to avoid the sterility of excessive accuracy and brush stokes are not entirely blended out. I believe it is important to be able to read how the painting is made. I work mainly on paper which has been stretched in the watercolour tradition and primed with gesso. Layers of thin acrylic overlay underpainting, and the composition is built up holistically. Finally, the detail is added by stippling with a size 0 brush. Delamore Artist Katherine Taylor Katherine Taylor is a UK-based ceramic artist working primarily with stoneware, exploring form, surface, and material presence through hand-built vessels. Her practice balances respect for traditional making with a contemporary approach to colour, mark-making, and surface design. She uses vibrant, expressive glazes, embracing subtle variation and evidence of the hand, allowing material and process to shape each piece. The vessels are tactile and decorative, inviting interaction and contemplation. Self-taught, Katherine developed her practice after leaving a twenty-year career in the NHS and holds a degree in English Literature, which informs her sensitivity to narrative, rhythm, and balance. Delamore Artist Virginia Griem Virginia Griem is a potter, painter and poet from Kingsteignton, Devon. She has been creating hand-built pots in stoneware for the last 12 years and has developed her own style of narrative pots inspired by landscape, poetry and local tradition. Virginia believes that clay is an amazing medium which lends itself not just to sculpture and decorative items, but also to storytelling. Clay is a large part of the local economy around Kingsteignton forming a link between the local landscape and Virginia’s own creativity. She is also a member of Newton Abbot Art Group and, as a poet, is part of Teign Contemporary, Poetry Teignmouth and Moor Poets. Delamore Artist Bud Hodson Bud Hodson is a local Devon potter with a small studio at The Honiton Pottery Workshop). She specializes in small batch stoneware production including thrown and handmade tableware and small sculptures of birds and animals, glazes inspired by nature’s colours. As with most small studio potters, her work is original and all pieces are unique designs. She loves every aspect of working with clay and is interested in exploring more complicated glazing techniques and washes and tries to keep her work current by attending courses. Bud sells through pottery markets throughout the year (including Exeter and Tavistock) and participates annually in Devon Open Studios. She is a member of Devon Artist Network and Westcountry Potters Association. She thoroughly enjoyed participating in last year’s Delamore Arts Makers’ Takeover in the Stalls through Artizan. Delamore Artist Emma Baldwin I was first introduced to clay at school aged 14 and have been working with it on and off ever since. I studied ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic in 1992, where I had the privilege to be taught by both Walter Keeler and Mo Jupp - two truly inspiring potters. Jump forward 30 years, after teaching and running an Art Foundation course at Abingdon and Witney College, I am now a full time potter. I started off with hand-built forms working on the kitchen table before combining hand-built and wheel-thrown forms. I now almost exclusively produce wheel-thrown vessels. I enjoy making both functional and sculptural forms. My inspiration for form comes from both contemporary and historical sources. I apply colour through the glazing process to accentuate the shape but also to find expression within the reactions triggered by overlapping the glazes. I work with slips, underglazes, and oxides to achieve reactive and textured surfaces. If the kiln gods have been kind, when I lift the lid, I see magic, alchemy! Delamore Artist Lynette Taylor My ideas primarily deal with the passage and layering of time and the traces left behind. Old and derelict buildings appeal to me in particular, with their atmosphere of past presences and the hints of imagined stories. I’m drawn to the layered textures and colours found on worn surfaces, evidencing the passing of time and often revealing hidden treasures. I mostly use hand-printing methods for my woodcuts because of the control it allows in the overlaying of many colours and textures to produce a more painterly approach. "The endless colours surrounding us and the natural changing elements evoke emotion which I try to convey through my paintings." Delamore Artist Jo West Jo is the first UK colour changing resin artist. She has been selling professionally since 2016, has had many commissions and has gained interest from galleries. She was born in Plymouth and still lives in the beautiful south coast of Devon. A contemporary self-taught artist who is heavily influenced by her rural upbringing, she explores themes around nature. Her passion for understanding the human mind led her to study Psychology at Cardiff University and she went on to work with vulnerable people for over 15 years. She attributes focusing on the needs and feelings of others as inspiration for much of her work. Jo has trained in stained glass and jewellery making and uses some of the techniques she learnt to create her paintings. Jo and her husband built their home 3 years ago. After having their second child, she is now able to work from home in her studio enabling her to spend more time with her children and reconnect with her lifelong love of painting. To create her beautiful paintings she uses acrylics, mixed media and resin. There are many different processes she uses to create a painting and a lot of her work is done outside. She uses a mixture of tools to create layers and adds crystals, metal leaf, fine glitter, iridescent powder and fibre in the resin to add depth and interesting aspects. Jo has recently started using semi-precious and precious stones in some of her work as she is interested in the healing properties of crystals and is also experimenting with pressed flowers. She uses a multi layered approach, drawing the viewer into the depth and having the desire to touch the painting. Each piece is original and unique and is finished with a final coat of high gloss resin giving a glass effect. Jo loves experimenting and is excited to see how her style will develop. Her aim is to make you smile and take you to a happy place. She loves the use of colour and how it can influence how you feel. Colour is nature's signalling system and she is fascinated how it can affect behaviour. Jo finds painting very therapeutic and follows her heart with every painting she does, she has so many ideas in her head, any chance she has, she paints. The Resin somehow brings a calmness and tranquillity to her paintings, she views it as slow running water. As much as she loves colour and glitter, the resin balances it out. For the last year Jo has been experimenting with colour change products and has produced beautiful pieces. She is fascinated how the atmosphere can change and how it can affect feelings. She has always been excited by the idea of an evolving painting so this has given her the opportunity to develop this concept. As the painting warms up, the colour gradually changes to another or changes to a spectrum of colours. Jo endeavours to bring a little bit of nature into your home. Delamore Artist Robert Oscar Lenkiewicz Robert Oscar Lenkiewicz (31 December 1941 – 5 August 2002) was one of South West England’s most celebrated artists of modern times. Perennially unfashionable in high art circles, his work was nevertheless popular with the public. Lenkiewicz is regarded by some as a great painter who is ‘finally being recognised as such after all these years of neglect by the art establishment, particularly by London, who would never have him. He didn’t really play the game as far as London commercial galleries were concerned. He did his own thing out in the provinces, which was looked down upon.’ He produced as many as 10,000 works (though this figure includes his prolific output as a pencil portrait artist),[4] often on a large scale, and in themed ‘projects’ investigating hidden communities (Vagrancy 1973, Mental Handicap 1976) or difficult social issues (Suicide 1980, Death 1982). In 1981, he faked his own death, announcing his demise to the local newspapers. When Lenkiewicz died in 2002, he left behind a particularly macabre legacy as the embalmed body of one of his friends, a tramp named Diogenes, was found in the cupboard section at the bottom of a bookcase. The Lenkiewicz Foundation (educational charity) was established in 1997, receiving the bequest of the painter’s remaining collection of works. The artist’s voluminous diaries, illustrated notebooks, and relationship journals are in the Foundation’s collection, which was shown at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery in 2009. "An artist whose vision of the Westcountry landscapes and seascapes underlined his deep attachment to the area." Delamore Artist Arthur Homeshaw RWA Arthur Homeshaw was a Westcountry artist whose work tapped into the deep-rooted influence that represent the best in British art. These perspectives are discernible in both his linocuts and his pastels. Furthermore, his work displays an imagination that is both exuberant yet introverted and at times secretive. This paradoxical quality infuses all his work. He developed a stylised manner of rendering reality which explored the land and the sea as many of the best English artists have done. This style is delivered with a constant delight that is barely concealed in his work. It consists of the striking use of bold tonal contrasts and complex patterning. There are also bubbling textures redolent of Samuel Palmer's work (1805 - 1881). Arthur Homeshaw's work can be placed in the English romantic tradition of Paul Nash (1889 - 1946) and his work also reveals the influence of the wood engravings of Eric Ravilious (1903 - 1942). The power of his images was the product of a reputation that had been established over fifty years of artistic endeavour. He was a member of the Royal West of England Academy from 1964 and in his last exhibition there in 2010, he was a senior member of the Academy. Arthur Homeshaw's work has been purchased by the Victoria & Albert Museum. (Dockside Terraces) In addition, his linocuts were selected for the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1964, 1984 and 1985. In sum, we are presented with an artist whose vision of the Westcountry landscapes and seascapes underlined his deep attachment to the area. "In the main, my work falls into several broad, thematic categories. There are pictures which have been inspired by the scenery of Devon and Cornwall, those which explore the nature of distortions through reflections, and those which are simply quirky, even humorous." Delamore Artist Jennifer Harris Born and educated in Bristol, Jennifer Harris R.W.A. studied at the West of England College of Art. She worked as a toy designer and then display designer before becoming Art Department Technician, first at the College of St Matthias Bristol and then in the Polytechnics Faculty of Education. She moved to Devon in 1978 and now works from home. She has exhibited in Paris and New York, in the Royal Academy and at a number of shows with the Printmaker’s Council, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal National Theatre and both the International Mini-Print Exhibition and National Print Exhibition in London. There have also been a number of solo shows. “In the main, my work falls into several broad, thematic categories. There are pictures which have been inspired by the scenery of Devon and Cornwall, those which explore the nature of distortions through reflections, and those which are simply quirky, even humorous. Several years ago, I gave up etching, which had always been my main medium, now I paint in acrylics. I always think of what Turner said, ‘Painting is a Rum Business.’” Etching is the opposite of wood engraving in that the image is printed from the lines incised in the plate, rather than from the surface. It’s also different from engraving, with which it’s often confused, because in etching the acid does all the work. It is a very time-consuming activity, some of the prints shown here have taken up to three months to finish. Each print is unique, as it is made by hand. There are many stages in the process, starting with ‘laying a ground’ (a waxy covering) over the etching ‘plate’ which is usually copper. This protects the plate against the action of the acid. The design is drawn on the plate with a needle, and where the ground is removed, the acid will bite into the copper, resulting in cavities in the surface which will subsequently hold the printing ink. Heavy pressure from the printing rollers forces the ink out of the lines onto thick, dampened paper, and a print is obtained. Delamore Artist Laura Segan I am a multidisciplinary visual artist. I work primarily with textiles and experimental film photography. I am interested in the connection between creativity and mental health/well-being, and in art making for processing life experiences. For the last two years I have been focusing my time on making art based in specific places and using natural resources from those places to create work. I have been making natural inks, natural dyes, natural pigments and using plant-based photographic developer to develop analogue photographs. Because the resources are from that specific place, the place itself is able to make its own mark on the work that I am creating. This practice has also encouraged me to think a lot more about the environmental impact of my work and to fully immerse myself in each new environment. This relates directly to the residency opportunity at Torre Abbey and the question of ‘what happens when nature takes over’ as I am working with nature and issues of sustainability, climate and the environment in my work.
