- Torbay Place Champions
Do you live or work in Torbay? Are you as passionate as I am about the wonderful place we live? Now how often do you share that positivity with others? It’s something that doesn’t necessarily come naturally, perhaps we are guilty of taking what we have for granted; a stunning natural environment, beautiful beaches and green spaces, incredible restaurants, seafood and family fun, creativity around every corner… But shouting about how lucky we are is something we should all really be in the habit of doing more, whatever the context. It’s something I get to do every day in the course of my work for Torbay Culture and Artizan Collective. I’ll tell anyone who will listen that we’re living on the creative coastline for Devon, that we’re unrivalled for spectacular heritage, exhibitions and culture, and all of this can be enjoyed just a stone’s throw from the UKs most spectacular scenery. In fact, it’s the easiest job in the world, I could not have an easier sales pitch! And yet what I do so naturally during my 9-5 I’ll all to easily forget in my personal life and this is equally if not more important a setting for me to be sharing my passion for Torbay. It’s not just the place I work, it’s the place I live and there’s a hundred reasons why. So, praise for this incredible place should surely always be on the tip of my tongue, my icebreaker in every social scenario, the first quip drawn from my small talk quiver. And that’s exactly what I’m pledging to do. I’m going to Champion this Place in every area of my life, not because it’s my job, but because it’s easy and natural to do so when I am this lucky to be here. If any of this rings true to you, then I’d challenge you to make this same pledge, to be a Champion for Torbay and to share your experience of this place widely and unreservedly. I’d also invite you, through what you already do every single day, to be a part of Torbay’s Story. Perhaps some of you are detecting a few choice words now, a recognisable lexicon that has been present in other articles, social media posts, maybe even emails in your inbox in the past weeks and months. I’d like to quickly dispel any concerns and at the same time come clean. Whilst to be clear this is no sales pitch, nor a call to arms, or an attempt to subliminally recruit you, I have been motivated to honestly share this experience by work that I am currently involved with as a steward of the recently commissioned Torbay Story. For those that know what this is, wonderful, for those that are unaware, it doesn’t matter. What matters in my view, is that this work is an opportunity for me, and you, and all of us, to be real. Its aims, its goals, the nuance all have a place, but that place is not here. What is significant in my view is, at the core this work is about you and I and the way we live our lives and experience this wonderful place. And so, what I want to do, is invite you to shape that work by simply honestly and authentically sharing your story. In official terms this is an invitation to be a Torbay Champion, to, if you wish, attend Champion’s Events that will form a part of this celebration of Torbay. But none of that is compulsory. What is important is sharing the Torbay experience, and if that’s something you feel passionate about then I’d invite you to join me in sharing. If that means you want to know more about the Torbay Champions, then that’s great and you can drop me an email to find out more. But equally, if you just want to celebrate this place, then you don’t need a framework to do that, just get out there and make the effort to celebrate it. And if that’s something you want to do, then you can drop me an email to share that as well… jacobbrandon@artizangallery.co.uk #TorbayStory #PlaceChampions

- How a piece of Soviet era flooring has connected Torbay to the war in Ukraine
“Do you know what this is?” I am being presented with a role of rubbery looking material, by English Riviera printmaker Ian Cox. Ian is one of our resident artists at Artizan Collective Gallery, we’re in his studio, and I know that what he is holding out to me is “lino”, his preferred printmaking medium. Printer’s “lino” is not dissimilar to the linoleum you might have at home on your kitchen floor, but it’s engineered to be carved rather than hardwearing. It is used to create relief prints, a process by which surface material is cut away to leave behind a block which can be inked and applied to paper to create a print. But there’s one thing about this particular piece of lino that’s throwing me off. “Why’s it red?” I ask. Printmaker’s lino is normally grey, or white, the neutral colour that helps the printmaker to draw onto the surface prior to cutting it with a gouge. If you’re struggling to picture this, think back to when you did potato stamping in school – the process is similar. “This, is genuine Soviet era lino!” Ian tells me excitedly. He’s received it as part of an art swap with fellow printmaker Olesya Dzhuraeva who he knows through an online printmakers group and she’s sent him a stunning print and some of the unique materials she uses to create her work. Unlike printmaker’s lino, Olesya’s Soviet Era lino was originally flooring. She’s recovered it in large roles, and now uses it, imperfections and all, to create incredible works of art. Because of this, unusual distortions, the sort of thing you might expect to see in an old analogue photograph, appear in her work, but rather than being made by light leaks or marks from the negative they’re instead created by the scuffs and marks from years of footsteps that have passed by. As a result, even though the scenes she captures are contemporary, it feels as though you’re looking at a work that could be decades old. And in a way they are; the first marks made on this lino occurred many years ago and now Olesya in her own talented way is finishing the work started by those feet, seamlessly integrating her cuts into the piece before printing the final work from her studio in Kyiv, Ukraine… A studio that at the end of February Olesya left behind, fleeing the city with her husband and three children. I had that conversation about the lino with Ian back in December last year and as we marvelled at the unique artefact we held and the perhaps even more unique artwork that had been created with it, the idea of Soviet Era lino felt like a piece of distant history. In January, he suggested we could hang the piece Olesya had sent him in our upcoming English Riviera Print Exhibition. We both agreed it would make an incredible addition, not just from an artistic standpoint (Olesya is a truly exceptional printmaker) but also for the unparalleled story behind the work. We could not have foreseen the story Olesya’s work would ultimately be telling by the time we reached the exhibition. Looking at the work now, the ambiguous space it occupies, one foot in the Soviet Era and the other in the contemporary context of war-torn Ukraine, has an almost overwhelming effect. The contemporary Kyiv street depicted that I first viewed back in December, had once brought to mind the strength of a built up urban city, the sharp lines of Olesya’s unique lino technique, reenforcing the harsh, immovable brutalist architecture. Now, the image seems almost ghostly, a historic imprint of a space in limbo, a street that may soon find the motionless cars frozen in the scene replaced with Russian tanks. But perhaps the most unnerving aspect of the image is the graffiti face that stares out from the print - a face contorted into a scream that gives the print its title and seems to foretell the events that are unfolding today. Right now, Olesya and the whole of Ukraine are faced with unimaginable uncertainty and horrors. For Olesya one part of this unknown is whether she will ever see her studio or its contents again; her artworks, her printing press, her rolls of red Soviet Era lino. For us, we find ourselves with an unexpected connection to this conflict. Our potential the help seems limited and already numerous others around Torbay have taken far more significant actions than we ever could to show their support and solidarity with Ukraine. But we have an opportunity here to do something no matter how small. For two years now we’ve been working with the global Artist Support Pledge initiative to help creatives during the pandemic. If you don’t know it, look it up either using #ArtistSupportPledge or visiting their website artistsupportpledge.com and you’ll find that this incredible initiative that looked to help creatives through COVID, is once again now trying to do some good, having been reimagined as the Ukraine Support Pledge. We’ll be continuing to support the initiative, so from now, all our proceeds that would have previously gone to this scheme will now find there way to causes in Ukraine. In addition, Ian has offered what is now perhaps the last edition of Olesya’s work “The Scream” for auction with bids being taken throughout our English Riviera Print Exhibition at our Fleet Walk venue, and online at www.artizangallery.co.uk/ukraine Proceeds will find their way to Olesya and Ukraine based on her needs at the end of the auction. #ukraine22 #erpe22 #iancox #studios22

- Torbay Youth Trust Celebrates Young Carers’ Work
A remotely delivered series of workshops will bring together young carers from across Torbay to create a giant ‘Wheel of Love’, an art piece inspired by the spiritual mandala style, that will celebrate the important role they play in supporting loved ones. Torbay Youth Trust commissioned the project with the support of Artizan Collective CIC following another successful series of creative workshops run during the first lockdown with Participate Arts. The new call sought ambitious proposals that could work flexibly given current uncertainty but still offer a meaningful and valuable experience for the young people the Trust supports. Caring, nurturing and compassion are behaviours found throughout all the natural world including many animal and bird species. The ‘Wheel of Love’ project, which will be delivered by visual artist and designer Shiraaz Ali, presents an opportunity for the young carers Torbay Youth Trust supports to explore their evolving role in a positive, fulfilling and collective way. The project is based on the Mandala, a pattern believed to be created using sacred geometry which guides the very atoms that make us and the solar system that we inhabit. The ‘Wheel of Love’ is inspired by the dedication, compassion and unconditional love inherent in caring in all its forms. Each participant will receive a panel that forms a part of the Mandala whole and materials with which to decorate it. Through guided sessions, they’ll be given the opportunity to explore different materials, techniques and styles, before applying what they learn to their panel, with the opportunity to express their experiences through this creative outlet. All the panels will then be brought together to form a one and half metre wide mandala style wheel, which will go on display at Artizan Gallery and tour to other venues, before finding a permanent display with the Trust. The project has also secured the support of South Devon College and the South Devon Marine Academy who will be constructing the panels and framework that the young carers will decorate. Workshops will be delivered throughout March with the final showcase planned for later in the year outside of lockdown to provide an opportunity to share and celebrate the stories of these incredible young people. To follow the project, visit www.artizangallery.co.uk/wheeloflove Jo Morrell, Director of the Youth Trust: “We are so excited to be working closely with Artizan on this, and other art projects which celebrate the creativity of our wonderful Young Carers. We are very grateful for the opportunity this partnership gives us to focus on hope and celebration in what has been a very difficult time for them.” Shiraaz Ali, Workshop Leader, Visual Artist and Designer: “During these challenging times that many people are going through especially young people, I believe that we must aim towards spreading love, kindness and compassion to all through artistic practices or via any other means. I believe that the ‘Wheel of Love’ project for Torbay young carers presents the ability for them to be able to explore their evolving caring role in a positive, fulfilling and collective way.” Jacob Brandon, Director Artizan Collective CIC: “The opportunity to help commission this project is one we are thrilled to have been a part of. The value access to art can play in young peoples’ lives is immeasurable, and Torbay Youth Trust’s vision to bring this into their work supporting carers is to be celebrated.” The project is funded by the Imagine This Torbay Partnership. My work process is rooted in a simple admiration for nature; from the cells that form our physical bodies to the sacred geometry guiding our solar system and universe. The intention through all my mediums of work is to capture fleeting, intangible and metaphysical moments and suspend them in time. Through my artwork and architectural practice I aim to respect, enhance and pay gratitude to our environment. I work sustainably and eco-friendly in order to better our communities and the places we call home. I believe that In order to grow together we must ignore our differences and instead celebrate our similarities to create a brighter, healthier and peaceful future. https://shiraazali.com/ #tyt22

- Devon Open Studios 2022 - Torbay Grant
For Devon Open Studios 2022, Artizan Collective are pleased to be working with Devon Artist Network to support Torbay Artists taking part in this year’s event. Following a successful event in 2021, Torbay partners are keen to continue the growth of this regionally significant arts event in the area, and the grants programme will play a vital role whilst there is still some uncertainty in the months ahead. We are able to offer 50% fee grants to up to 9 artists based in Torbay (“Torbay Grants”), and one full fee grant along with hosting at our venue for an artist that doesn’t have access to their own studio (“Artizan Gallery Grant”). About the Grant The grants are for any artist working from studios or living in Torbay. Beyond this geography, there are no conditions on entry and anyone is eligible to receive an award. The grants will provide a financial contribution to your fees as well as inclusion in a wide range of promotional support that Artizan will be undertaking to promote the event and studios in Torbay as a whole, including membership and presence on our website for the event. The one change this year, is that the grant can now be redeemed against group venues as well. Whilst the grant value will not change (50% of single studio fee) this can be applied to a group if you are one of the participating artists. Applying for a grant Applying for a grant is easy you simply need to complete two steps: You must have registered your interest in Devon Open Studios by emailing openstudios@devonartistnetwork.co.uk once applications open in January. YOU MUST SUBMIT THESE DETAILS BY MIDNIGHT FEBRUARY 28TH AND AWARDS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK OF MARCH How the grant will work Artizan will pay your full fee on your behalf to Devon Artist Network and request your 50% contribution directly. If you have already reserved your space and made your payment to Devon Open Studios you can still apply for this grant. In this circumstance Devon Artist Network will refund your fee to you if your application is successful. The “Torbay Grants” are based on the standard individual fee to participate in Devon Open Studios 2021 and the grant will contribute 50% of this fee. If you want to take advantage of an upgraded listing in the guide you will be required to pay the difference. The “Artizan Grant” is similarly based on a standard individual fee and your listing in the guide will be included in a half page section alongside our other venue contributions to this year’s event. - Princess Theatre Torquay - Celebratory Commission
Artizan Collective is pleased to support the Ambassador Theatre Group and Arts & Heritage in the delivery of an exciting artist commission to be intalled at Torbay's Princess Theatre. Funded by COVID relief investment from Arts Council England, the opportunity seeks an artist that will celebrate the Theatre's heritage and place at the heart of the cultural landscape in Torbay. The Commission Princess Theatre sits in a prominent position within Torquay, built as the main feature of the redevelopment of the Princess Gardens back in 1961 it opened to host the greatest entertainers of the time - the opening night featuring Tommy Cooper and Morecambe and Wise and including The Beatles in its long list of entertainers performing there. Though the programme has now changed to reflect the needs of contemporary audiences– the building still sits at the heart of Torquay, looking over Tor Bay to spectacular scenery, sunsets and views of the harbour. This commission is an opportunity for an artist to delve into the theatre’s history, engage with its communities and staff and extract the stories contained within its walls. It also presents an expanded opportunity for an artist to explore Torquay’s heritage. From its coastal history, including possible themes of the bay’s shift from fishing to fashionable seaside resort, to Torquay’s unique natural environment and climate, or the history of Princess Theatre and its unique views; from Bay to Stage. The venue wants to be as open as possible about the themes and imagery an artist would like to explore. The commission is being planned for the walls, windows and/ or stairwell of the café bar/ restaurant. This could be on one of these or be throughout the spaces.
