Opportunity Listing Please note, this is the rearranged 2024 Students' Exhibition which was moved in our calendar in consultation with schools and other education partners. Artizan Collective CIC is pleased to announce the return of its Student Exhibition for the first time since 2019, our previously annual showcase celebrating creative visual arts at secondary, college and foundation level (KS3 -FD). The opportunity welcomes schools, colleges and individual students to submit work for exhibition and share the next generation of future artists. Next year, the exhibition will be hosted in our Fleet Walk venue enabling us to welcome more students and schools from across Torbay to get involved and show work in a professional exhibition space. Participants will also have the chance to win a range of exhibition prizes sponsored by local businesses and meet our professional studio artists who work from the venue. The relaunch of this staple in our programme has been made possible thanks to support from Community Ward Funding and Tormohun Ward Councillors. • Gill Melling - Geopark Artist Residency - In the Studio and on Location.

Over the last 2 weeks I have been busy cracking on with work and both holding and taking part in events.   I have hung my net and chain piece for the first time after much shoulder aching drilling into the ceiling. I can now take it in and ponder what needs changing, adding, taking away etc. I find pieces can only evolve in a process of feedback loops; to make, to respond, to make, to respond.  https://www.instagram.com/p/DAWCwkVId1T/ Finished my tiny Moses basket and sat it on a cradle of chip forks with feet in the sand. I took part in a beach clean with  @torbaycleanercoasts   at St Mary's Bay and Jess found this nurse hound Catshark egg casing. What a beautiful thing. Some other interesting shapes and textures of what is essentially litter that we found. Great to meet new people on the beach clean and to talk to them, about my project. Look out for their next one in October.  Having spent 2 hours sewing a pillow for my cuttlefish I decided it was too big so had to unpick it. Sometimes you have to follow your gut, take a deep breath and be brave enough to undo what you have just done as you know it's the right thing to do. Hey ho! Thank you to everyone who came to meet me on Thursday the 26th September to find out about my project. It was really valuable to talk through my ideas and get feedback.  I made a seahorse paper chain using fish and chip paper. I was talking to Neil from  @seahorsetrust   about the nature of clinging on. How sea creatures cling on to seagrass and how humanity is clinging on. It seems like a theme. I've also been exploring the idea of chains, so it seemed relevant to bring the ideas together in the form of a paper chain. I love the shadows it creates and these are an important part of it.  I found Neptune's trident! Well not really but great contrast of colours. Loads of seagrass torn up and dumped on the beach from the rough season and easterly winds but  @rachlouall  and I also got a close up look at living seagrass exposed at low tide. Yes we are a bit obsessed with seagrass! No swimming though as it was too windy, cold and murky . A massive thank you to everyone who joined in with my "In conversation" this morning. It was such a rich and valuable discussion which led us in lots of fascinating and poignant directions. It really helped me evaluate my work, and find connections with your own creative thinking. It'd be great to keep in touch. I'll be putting the audio of the conversation on the Artizan Gallery website soon.   Final week of my studio residency  @artizangallery . I decided to make the seahorses more precarious by tearing their tethers. Also continuing to experiment with ink and chip paper trying to highlight the grease marks which create absences. I'm impatient though and keep fiddling instead of letting it dry!   #geoparkgm24 #geoparkresidencies

  • Gill Melling - Geopark Artist Residency - Research

This is a prime example of how a chain form a body or anchor can drag along the seabed and potentially pull up and destroy seagrass. Visit  @oceanconservationtrust  and  @seahorsetrust  to sea examples of eco moorings which raise or remove the chain from the seabed completely. Anchoring to eco moorings is crucial in preserving the seagrass beds and our precious carbon store and oxygen producer. Seagrass is vital to providing us with the air we breath and helps to prevent climate change by being 35% more efficient in carbon capture and sequestration than rainforest. We need it!  #carboncapture #bluemeadowsproject   #geoparkartistresidencies Torre Abbey Sands snorkel visiting the seagrass and the creatures that inhabit. Intriguing and mesmerising. Some spare seagrass seeds to experiment with. I will be trying to dry them out.  Very interesting research visit to see the Seagrass labs for the Blue Meadows Project at the National Marine Aquarium. Amelia showed me round to see how they collect and grow the seagrass for re-populating areas of the seagrass meadows. They collect seagrass seeds in late summer and Autumn and then after sorting the seeds into those that are viable and non-viable they cultivate them under strict conditions in the lab. I am hoping to include some the seeds they don’t need in one of my projects. #geoparkgm24 #geoparkresidencies

  • Gill Melling - Geopark Artist Residency - Studio Time

First day  @artizangallery  of my studio residency. Orientating myself with a bit of Seacell spinning for my net piece. I've been carefully picking out seagrass seeds with tweezers ready for drying. These are just emerging from their husks but are unviable meaning they can't be used for replanting. They were donated to me to experiment with from the National Marine Aquarium. Filling the words in my cuttlefish bone piece with dried seagrass seeds. I am going to need a few more!  Beautiful shadows cast by my net. Made of seaweed fibre. It’s pretty mindful making it but also shoulder aching. I'm making a tiny seagrass basket perhaps for a seahorse. A small one! We'll see. It's very fiddly.  #geoparkgm24 #geoparkresidencies
