Oil by Caroline Hall
St Ives 3, Sea Wall
Caroline Hall
I am an established artist based in Winchester. I have a long attachment to Devon since working there, and often return to the West Country to paint. Primarily an abstract artist my work process involves putting paint on and taking it off, building up many layers until the painting itself not an image in my mind, becomes the guiding force.
I have exhibited all over the UK and in Europe and have paintings with galleries in London and Hampshire.
This large painting was painted over an older work and it was by scraping back and revealing the underneath textures that the story of the painting started to immerge.
I had visited St Ives earlier in the year and it is by choosing a particular colour palette that I give myself a starting point. Aluminium is my normal surface and it works particularly well for me as the drama of painting is always played out during the process and the surface has to be resilient!
The painting is on a bespoke aluminium panel which has a wooden subframe. The piece is not heavy and not framed so that it appears to 'float' on the wall.
