Lockdown Family
Lewis Brymner
Lewis Brymner is a photographer currently based in South Wales. Lewis’s work aims to explore individuals and the environments that define them, often through a blend of portraiture, objects, place and landscape. Photography has become his tool to connect with the places and people around him, to better understand the world and his connection to it. Nature has become a thematic pattern in Lewis Brymner’s recent work as an investigation into the role the natural world plays in the everyday.
A focus on analogue photography and print has led to some early ventures into creating photo books and zines. Additionally Lewis’s extended projects have focused on design, having performed as a lead designer for two university publications, ‘Wave’ and ‘Sonder’.I’d been saving the final polaroid shot in my camera for a few years now, as this particular peel apart film has been discontinued and could be my last. Three weeks into the first lockdown I decided to finally use the polaroid to photograph our lockdown family. Pictured in the image are my partner Emma, myself and Seamus. Seamus found his way into our lives a few months before the global pandemic hit the UK, he was a friendly stray who seemed to have chosen us as his adoptive family. When the lockdown began, and the garden was our only access to the outdoors, Seamus became a fixture in our everyday life. Through the fear, stress, isolation and boredom that lockdown created, Seamus was a constant comfort to us. We grew to love him and created a temporary home for him. We are grateful for these memories, which cut through the gloom of such a complicated time. When the time came for us to move away, Seamus was given to a shelter where we hope he was able to find his final home. Saying goodbye to Seamus was bittersweet, we would have loved to have kept him with us. Having this image helps remind us that there is always something good to be found in difficult times.
