Torbay sits at the heart of the English Riviera, it’s fading grandeur and crumbling façade reflect the high levels of poverty and unemployment in this seaside town.
Outreach projects that often form the heart of local communities here have had to change the way they work. Since the pandemic began there has been a fourfold increase in food poverty: with local food banks and front line community organisations forming an alliance to try to make sure no one goes hungry.
Volunteers organise food and basic sanitary supplies into bags, enough for one person to live from over three days.
Donations come from individuals, food suppliers, and local businesses. Fulfilling the daily shortfall is a fragile and complex operation, dependent on continued financial donationations.
Community centres, offices, unused church buildings and village halls are now the unexpected home to this growing front line.Photography
