Lewis Brymner

Lewis Brymner is a photographer currently based in South Wales. Lewis’s work aims to explore individuals and the environments that define them, often through a blend of portraiture, objects, place and landscape. Photography has become his tool to connect with the places and people around him, to better understand the world and his connection to it. Nature has become a thematic pattern in Lewis Brymner’s recent work as an investigation into the role the natural world plays in the everyday.

A focus on analogue photography and print has led to some early ventures into creating photo books and zines. Additionally Lewis’s extended projects have focused on design, having performed as a lead designer for two university publications, ‘Wave’ and ‘Sonder’.

A moment during isolation. Pictured is Emma, my partner of two years, as she sits in our garden during the first lockdown in 2020. Having to stay within the confines of one house meant finding new ways to entertain and stimulate ourselves. We drew inspiration from an old photo album we found in a charity shop, its pages filled with beautiful Victorian illustrations of garden flowers. On this day we decided to create an elaborate photo shoot similar to old portraits and paintings with the intention of filling our album.    

Emma sits before a green backdrop, light fading and dressed in her most elegant outfit on a Tuesday evening in March. The image almost takes you away to another era, in itself a form of escapism. However, the backdrop exposes the expanse of gardens behind, a glimpse into the reality of our isolation and the confinement of our surroundings.
