I wanted to create a series of paintings based around the harbour in Torquay. I love the wheel as a feature on the horizon in the bay. I have taken my children in the wheel and it gave me a whole new perspective of the sea front. In my paintings I like to think of the wheel as representing the wheel of fortune or the circle of life. This painting was from a lovely sunny afternoon when I was enjoying some sketching by the old harbour. I love it when the light is just catching on glimpses on objects but that is somehow enough to help you identify them and I used this to create the boats. There were lots of people out walking and enjoying the sunshine. I really like the lady in red in this picture. Her red hair was catching the sun and glowing. She was wearing red which adds to the warmth. We exchanged a few friendly words, that is enough for me to feel a connection to her for this painting.
