Grey day Over the Bay, Slip-on Sands, South Milton

Growing up between living in the South West and Wales I've been very fortunate to be exposed to some incredible landscapes and have always been drawn to them whether it's the coast or the mountains. Over the years my influences and artistic heroes may have varied but the core of my work always comes back to my travels, music and those landscapes that surround me.

I work with a variety of materials always trying to experiment where possible with my style and technique. Experimentation is key within all my work, and sometimes making a mistake is the best thing for a piece to develop in the right way, mark making, and expression is at the heart of my work.

I studied at Cardiff University and actually trained as a printer/ textile designer, this practice diversified and found myself returning to painting and digitally produced pieces of work. Since graduating I trained to be a teacher and have been teaching Art, Media & Photography for 13 years.

I was fortunate enough to be granted a year out of teaching and during my sabbatical travelled the world soaking up all manner of art & design from an array of cultures. It was in Argentina, where we visited the San Telmo markets in the capital and was blown away by the variety of art and crafts on sale. Expressive mark making, vibrant colours, sweeping vistas all colliding together on the streets of Buenos Aires. Artists were literally selling pages ripped from their sketchbooks alongside grand paintings on canvas and board.

It was this brave and honest approach to displaying and viewing artwork that has stuck with me ever since and has influenced the way I think about my own practice. There is always something that will capture someone's imagination, so why not show everything from sketch or idea to final piece?

Two lone walkers making their way back to the car park, as the storm starts to come in. An unusually dark and moody day captured at South Milton. A reduced colour palette was challenging, but enjoyed the limitation in order to truly capture the mood of the image.
