Evolving Ideas
Liz Watts SWA is a sculptor and ceramicist working in clay, bronze, and papier-mâché. Originally a veterinary surgeon, Liz transitioned to art after moving to France in 1992, where she studied sculpture and ceramics at l’Atelier des Beaux-Arts Henri Matisse in Creil. She also trained in porcelain overglaze painting techniques with skilled craftspeople in Chantilly, integrating these skills into her work.
Liz is particularly drawn to porcelain for its tactile strength after firing and its remarkable capacity to hold colour. She describes herself as an "image chaser," allowing her ideas to evolve organically as she hand-builds her pieces. Often constructed in layers, her sculptures play with reflective surfaces and embedded forms, with shapes that serve as canvases for intricate painting.
Elected a full member of The Society of Women Artists (SWA) in 2022, Liz’s work reflects a deep connection to materiality and an ever-evolving exploration of form and texture.
