Artist

Elisabeth Hadley

Though I was born and bred in Yorkshire I now live in Devon. In my studio I sculpt beautiful, graceful and sensual figures, which I then have cast into limited edition bronzes. I studied Ceramics for my B.A at Bristol Polytechnic. I then went on to study the figure at the Sir Henry Doulton school of Sculpture. Between these years of studying, I spent a year working as a model maker for Aardman Animations, during this time I was asked to be the voice of Wendy in the cult plasticine animated series; “Rex the Runt”. I have won several design competitions and worked on some large figurative commissions: The Dartmouth Mermaid and Man and Boy, Brixham. I am inspired by mythology, Greek myths are found woven into my sculptures, I live close to the sea and when not sculpting I will be out kayaking, I feel my love of being out on the water and so close to nature is what sparks my interest in all those ancient gods and goddess.

Exhibition Record

English Riviera Summer Open 2025

Now in its tenth year, the English Riviera Summer Open returns for another vibrant celebration of contemporary visual art from across the UK. Hosted by Artizan Collective CIC in their central Torquay gallery, the exhibition transforms the walls of this much-loved cultural space into a rich, salon-style showcase of original work, selected through open submission. This year’s show promises a dynamic mix of emerging and established artists, with a wide range of media, styles, and voices. Expect painting, printmaking, photography, textiles, sculpture, and more, all curated with an emphasis on quality, originality, and diversity. With all works for sale and new pieces regularly rotated in, it’s the perfect destination for collectors, browsers, and art lovers alike. Proceeds from the exhibition will support Artizan's future development projects. Our Summer Open is now a well-established event on our annual calendar having originally started purely by chance a decade ago. Each year the event sees us build on previous shows as we welcome established and emerging artists working in many rich and diverse mediums and styles to Torbay for our personal homage to the great institution that is the Royal Academy Summer Show. Starting at the end of June and running through until late August, the exhibition promises to be as rich and diverse as in previous years.

On the newly transformed harbourside promenade in Torquay, a bronze sculpture now takes pride of place, celebrating one of the world’s best-loved writers, Dame Agatha Christie. Sculpted by Brixham-based artist Elisabeth Hadley, the piece invites you to sit beside Agatha and her beloved dog Peter, as she reflects on nature, storytelling, and her extraordinary life.

Commissioned as part of Torbay’s regeneration works, the sculpture was funded through the Torquay Town Deal with support from Torbay Council, Torbay Culture, the Agatha Christie Family, the International Agatha Christie Festival, and Artizan Collective.

This public artwork is a tribute from the English Riviera to its most famous daughter - a woman whose stories have captivated millions, and whose legacy is deeply rooted in the coastline and culture of South Devon.
