I am delighted to be taking part in the annual Society of Women’s Artists Exhibition. Normally held at the Mall Gallery in London, this year it will be exclusively online. I have applied a few times in the past, but this is the first time that I have been accepted so I am thrilled. The piece that will be part of the exhibition is titles ‘Arboreal Mists’, with the exhibition taking place 22nd – 30th September. Presenting a series of works completed over the last two years, acclaimed international multimedia artist Keith Frake joins Artizan for a showcase of dark, mixed media works in his exhibition, Between Heaven and Hell. Having studied Fine Art at Newcastle and the Royal College of Art in London during the 1970s, Frake has previously been known for his work in film, video and performance art, exhibiting works at festivals and galleries internationally. Today, he returns to this success, as a desire to paint and draw again has grown over time. A journey of rediscovery has seen a range of influences combine to inform his new work; the writings of Franz Kafka and Robert Walser, the poetry of Georg Trakl, the Book of Revelations, the films and writings of Andrei Tarkovsky. A visit to the National Gallery of Scotland saw the discovery of a small work by the expressionist painter Chaim Soutine, Le Mas Passe-Temps, Ceret 1920-21. This went on to become a pivotal image in informing Frake’s new works, attracted to its swirling foray of thickly applied paint, darkness, distorted trees, and buildings. These allusions resonate through a series that is dark in tone. A heavy bitumen base forms the substrate for most pieces from which, a process of removal, often competed over many days, reveals common motifs and themes through sanding, inscribing, and peeling techniques. Angels, trees, ladders, mountains, and tiny stick figures are revealed in negative against this thick, textural layer, emerging from darkness or perhaps immersed in it. “Meeting Keith prior to lockdown, we were excited to explore this compelling and challenging series with him and recognise our continued commitment to explore media and styles that reflect the diverse faces of contemporary and traditional visual art. He has captured in this new series a narrative of darkness, challenge, power and hope that we feel will be particularly resonant to audiences at present.” Between Heaven and Hell will be exhibited at Artizan Gallery, Lucius Street, Torquay from August 15th – September 5th and more information can be found at art-hub.co.uk/ex/frake20. Hannah Linden Hannah Linden has been described as a ‘metaphysical memory poet’. Her poetry explores the boundary between the inner and outer landscapes and how the past imprints itself on the present and the present shapes the past. She’s not afraid to go into dark corners or to stand and bask in the rain. A widely published writer, she has recently appeared in print and digital journals, Magma, The Interpreter’s House, And Other Poems, Lighthouse and Under the Radar, whilst her powerful poem exploring the impact of parental suicide was chosen as part of the 84 anthology. Recognition for her work has included winning the Cheltenham Festival Compound Poetry Competition 2015 for collaborative work with Gram Joel Davies; Highly Commended in the Prole Laureate Competition 2015; and longlisted for The Rialto Nature Poetry Competition 2018. Hannah reads and performs widely at festival and venues including Cheltenham Festival, Bristol Lyra, Torbay and Swindon and was also part of Poetry Pram which took poetry to Beautiful Days Festival 2018. She also recently headlined at the Phoenix Arts Centre, Exeter with a reading exploring male mental health. ‘one of the most powerful poetry readings I've seen in Plymouth this year.’ Nick Ingram on her reading as part of the #metoo event in Plymouth in March 2018 hosted by Wonderzoo and Feminist Fusion. ‘[her] set was incredible - so courageous and moving, so necessary (especially for the young men in the audience) and dazzling use of language. Artizan Gallery announces a new series of mixed bill performance events which look to celebrate and recognise the voices of their community. Adding to a packed April calendar, L.I.V.E will bring together speakers and performers from all backgrounds in a sustainable series defined only by its diversity. All acts, performers and speakers are guaranteed a minimum fee from the event hosts, but this is added to at each event through a “Pay As You Feel” ticketing system where audiences can pay as much as they can afford, or if they really enjoy their evening can give a little bit extra, with all proceeds going to those who have entertained and inspired them. “L.I.V.E is about local and community, it’s about individual voices, and spending an evening valuing the diversity of talent in Torbay. We’re looking to challenge our audiences by presenting them with a night where the next performer might bring anything from satirical comedy, to heartfelt spoken word, to an inspiring acoustic set, but also to change perspectives on what it is to invest in talent.” Jacob Brandon, Gallery Curator Sitting in among a packed April calendar which will also include a TEDxExeter Livestream, networking with Cocktails and Conversation and the first Devon Artist South Devon Meet-up, the inaugural event will bring together acoustic performers, Americana musicians, spoken word talent and more with four acts joining the gallery. And finally, Simon Coverdale brings finger-style guitar and his own song-writing expertise with a set that will offer tunes rooted more across the Atlantic than traditional folk. Simon Coverdale Simon is a Totnes based singer songwriter originally from Birmingham whose finger-style guitar based songs feature tunes rooted more across the Atlantic than in traditional folk but whose unique lyrics are all his own. "When the sound man at the Islington Hope & Anchor described my band as ‘the worst I have ever heard’ back in ‘82, I pretty well gave up on his early dreams of stardom, sold my guitars to go travelling and pointed my sights elsewhere. I managed another decade as a lost boy before finally settling down and raising children and an IT career in sunny Birmingham. It wasn’t until in my early 50’s that I picked up an acoustic guitar and started to write the songs I had always wanted to write. These are lyrical songs over a sweet minimal guitar, with a bit of the story style of Americana but not quite like anyone else." The echo of sea shore tides Lick the memories with welcoming times. Retreating and returning Lapping and yearning to get nearer to where the slick rocks glisten With the honesty of passing time. Pools spread, between rock formations, for only a short time. But the sea life is invigorated enough, to spawn their truths of existence. Hermit crabs emerge Shrimps are still submerged The subtle changes are filled with an aquatic order. Yet, when I look at you, all I see are deep pools, with fathomless depths. The honesty is deep Hidden Below What can be seen. Revelations juxtaposed with the Crustaceans that make up your time. Who knew? That as tides turn, so those that seek refuge, can be enveloped in the pools that you make - not only those on the edges of reason, but also those that secure a faith in the truth. Forget Captain Nemo And, all those leagues under the scene. Swim with me into the daylight and hear the echoes of the sea shore tides and bask in the honesty of the Riviera. Seventh heaven found beneath the stars. Beneath the canopies of Palms beneath the rough hewn rocks of a coastal cave. Love is found by the youthful brave in Grockle Town. Summer time bliss in search of a sacred kiss. Holiday time imitating the continental sublime The English Riviera! Oh welcome to The English Riviera! Where the indigenous youths prey on wide eyed travellers, offering excitement for a few nights and days in Grockle Town. Oh the Hustle! Coastal walks, beach parties, and promises of the heart. For a week or two at least. Oh the holiday romance! Where the Grockles are entranced by sharply dressed lothario’s, whose agendas are the quick fix of ecstasy in Grockle Town. Beneath the stars, beneath the rough hewn rocks of a coastal cave, welcome to the Seventh heaven of a system that is full of yearning, learning and emotions both good and bad and the feelings that we all crave. Good times for the sharing, and with no strings attached. That’s what you hope to find in Grockle Town. The fickleness of the season. As the sun sets and Devonian dreams are realised in an embrace, soon to be broken by the fond farewell in Grockle Town. Until the next influx of pleasure seekers arrive, dreaming of affairs of the heart. Yes – And, so it goes. The cycle. The System. The quest for that which is something more. Something more than what is often here. Tides turn, and such times are resigned to the memories of this Grockle Town, the place where the sea kisses the shore, Palm trees flutter in the breeze and, music plays and beauty likes to tease. The place where people survive making the illusion of paradise a reality during summer months. A place immortalised in pictures, both moving and not. Then winter blows in. The indigenous youths return to the old routine. Looking forward to next year, and “The Grockle Town” dream. That is the system. Simply put – It’s Kiss me quick and Ice cream. Yes – that is “The Grockle Town” dream. Ah! The seven hills! Can you name them? Let me try. There’s the Capitoline, the Palatine, the Quirinal … No! No, stop! I don’t mean Rome. I’m talking Torquay, here. Name the seven hills of Torquay. And there was silence for a day. And the man said, “Show me the hills, and I will name them.” Now the first hill was the hill of the inauspicious birds. And the man said “This hill is not like the others: I will not call it a hill. I will call it Tormohun. It is ruled by the Sun.” And this was the first hill of Torquay. At the second hill they found the head of a man. And the man said “This man is not my father. I will not call him a man. I call him a caveman. He is ruled by the Moon.” And this was the second hill of Torquay. The heights of the third hill were crowded with people. And the man said “Who or what do they worship? I will not call it a valley. I will call it Plainmoor. It is ruled by Mars.” And this was the third hill of Torquay. Southward at the fourth hill their way was barred, Barred by the tales of a giant, the giant who pulled down The rocks and the cliffs. And the man looked at the sky and said only “It is ruled by Mercury.” And this was the fourth hill of Torquay. To the west they came to a grove of great oaks. And the man said “This is a good place. Let the people come here, live peaceful in Chelston. It is ruled by Saturn.” And this was the fifth hill of Torquay. Now they heard the great roaring of engines, the sucking, The blowing. And the man said “This is the place of arrival. It deserves a new name. I will call it The Terminus.” He laughed as he said “It is ruled by Jupiter.” And this was the sixth hill of Torquay. Then the man said “I am tired. I need somewhere to rest. Show me where I can lie down to watch stars Dance over my head. I will call that place Ellacombe. It is ruled by Venus.” And this was the seventh hill of Torquay. Now of all the towns that are built on seven hills From Rome to Bristol, from Ceuta to Seven Hills, There is none that has been named as these have for you.
