  • The Ladykillers - A Comedy Thriller

The Christmas decorations are twinkling their theatre magic, and the second TOADS Season play this year, is all set and ready to conjure up some festive fun. ‘Tis the season to be jolly and this classic play is certain to tick all the boxes. With a superb view of the stage from every seat in the 240-capacity auditorium, you won’t miss a trick during this classic production of The Ladykillers at TOADS Little Theatre. Mrs Wilberforce, a sweet little old lady, rents out a room in her lopsided house to Marcus, a professor of music. She is blissfully unaware he is actually a maniacal criminal who is putting together a gang of misfits who will stop at nothing to commit the heist of their careers. Chaos ensues! The play is based on the iconic Ealing Studios film first shown in 1955 with among others Alec Guinness, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellars in the cast. As always, the set and lighting at the theatre are impressive and professional. Director, Anna Reynolds, who is delighted with her cast, said ‘I directed this once before at The Little Theatre in 2008 and the committee has allowed me to have another go, much to my joy. And what a joy it’s been. I can honestly say that we have all laughed all the way through the rehearsals…a good sign I feel. This is an opportunity to introduce four new actors to our membership namely Nick Hewlett, Edd Williams and Eduardo Galeano, not to mention probably the star of the play, General Gordon the parrot, beautifully played by Collette Velarde. We all so thrilled to be back in the theatre as I’m sure you are. We’re determined to smile and carry on!’ Why not enjoy a relaxing drink in the bar, or coffee lounge which are both open from 6.30pm before this brilliant show begins at 7.30pm. Interval drinks and bar (only) open after the show. Parking is free! Monday 13th – Saturday 18th December 7.30pm Matinee Saturday 18th only 2.30pm. TOADS Theatre Company. The Little Theatre. • Death Trap - An Ingenious Comedy Thriller

Due to the unfortunate cancellation of Ladies Day in October, Death Trap becomes the first season play to take to the Little Theatre Stage this year. Spookily, it was the first play cancelled when the first lockdown hit us. Now, the superb set is once again ready for the production to thrill the audience, and how welcome it will be. With a capacity to seat a 240-theatre audience each night, tickets are selling fast. The play centres on an unknown dramatist, Clifford Anderson, who has sent his new work to award-winning Broadway author Sidney Bruhl for comment – or has he? Sinister goings on ensue when Clifford plots to plagiarise Death Trap, or does the ‘Master’ have other ideas? Director, Jill Pettigrew says, ‘We are very pleased to have the opportunity to re-stage the thriller Death Trap following its closure in March last year due to the lockdown being imposed. Two of the cast Heidi Pyeburn and Ian Davies remain the same, but they are joined this time by familiar faces Martin Austin and Liz Lee. We also welcome highly regarded and experienced actor– Stephen Andrews – to Toads, in the lead role, Sidney Bruhl. After the roller coaster of the past 12 months, it’s been great to rehearse again and watch the set build take place.’ Written by Ira Levin in 1978, Death Trap has won many awards. It holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway, and has been nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best play. With its plot twists and comedy moments, this play is perfect for spicing up those cold November nights in Torbay. Enjoy your evening at Toads Little Theatre. Bar and coffee shop open from 6.30 pm. Free parking. Monday 15th – Saturday 20th November 7.30pm Matinee Saturday 20th only 2.30pm. TOADS Theatre Company. The Little Theatre. St Mark’s Road, Meadfoot, Torquay. TQ1 2EL. • Press Release - Riviera’s Hidden Contemporary Talent Whose Work is Internationally Collectible

Visitors to Fleet Walk’s Artizan Collective Gallery during September who ventured into their basement, may have discovered one of Torbay’s best kept artistic secrets. Hidden downstairs in an industrial looking workshop room, is the studio of emerging English Riviera artist William Mills, a young talent whose bold and expressive abstract style is capturing the attention of global collectors. The Torbay artist has been hosted by Artizan for a little over a year now; his largest artworks coming in at more than 6 foot tall require a big space to work on, and the expansive former stock room is the perfect setting. ‘My work is bold, expressive, and atmospheric, capturing something simultaneously fluent and graceful, yet towering, turbulent and contemplative.’ William Mills Painting professionally for approaching three years, his rapid rise to international notability was first achieved in his locality. In 2020 he was awarded the New Elizabeth Bovill Trophy for works entered into the Torbay Guild of Artists annual showcase, judged by another of Devon’s most successful contemporary talents, artist F. G. Davis. In the same year, he later received the Joanna Radford Prize from Devon Artist Network, a prestigious marker that has often predicted the success of upcoming artists from the region. This local recognition means that you may very likely now stumble across commissions from Mills’ adorning homes across Devon. But for every piece that is to be found between the coasts of the South West, there is at least one sibling on another continent, as international collectors have discovered his emerging work. Now, following a successful Devon Open Studios, William is showcasing a new series of paintings that visitors to the event in September will have perhaps seen him embarking upon. As well as featuring some of the towering evocative paintings that have typified his practice, for the first time he will also be exhibiting a collection of smaller studies that compliment these statement pieces. These scaled down works offer a new exploration of the multi-layered experience Mills’ looks to create; paintings that can be viewed as seascapes, skyscapes, or a world in between, are now revealed through a macro and micro lens. ‘I want viewers to be able to scour every detail of the canvas and never find any evidence of tools, brushwork or any form of deliberate human manipulation. It's an exhaustingly time-consuming process, slowly covering my tracks with layers upon layers of paint, but the reward when every inch of the painting has something interesting to say makes it so infinitely worth it.’ The exhibition runs from 19th – 31st October at the Artizan Collective Gallery, Fleet Walk. There will be an artist preview on 21st October from 18:30 – 20:30, reservations for which can be made at www.art-hub.co.uk/wmlaunch. • What I See - An Exhibition of New Works by Jayne Farleigh

As an artist I am always striving to get out of my head and onto canvas what I am thinking and feeling through any events in my life. At the moment I am sure we are all a bit fed up with covid and lockdown. Let me take you on my positive journey through this period of time and out the other side where yes, there were difficult times to be sure but there was and still is a light at the end of the tunnel. For me these last two years have given me the opportunity to focus as an artist on my nearest and dearest. To follow my children on a journey through an unprecedented time where there was fun and mischief to be had in the simplest of circumstances, to embrace my inner child.. Before Lockdown I was looking in detail at what it was that entertained us. My paintings focused on festivals/lantern parades, amusement arcades and crazy golf! All of which involved spending copious amounts of hard earned cash on sticky sweet delights, plastic light up toys and joy rides! Don't get me wrong, I am still up for this kind of entertainment and as I have been thinking of late I am in fact preconditioned to enjoy these kinds of things. But..... When this was off the menu I had the privilege of enjoying the simpler things in life. It was like a prolonged (very prolonged Christmas). Board games, card games, exercising for the sake of exercise. In the wet weather we would pull on those wellies and stamp in puddles or walk through the local shallow stream examining the tiny stones underfoot and collecting old pottery and other precious gems. Running wild in the dark was a must with torches and light up toys just for fun! A simple picnic in the park. Actually getting on the local park rides with my children (when they were open again, i've always tried to do this but there's normally too many people around). Feeding those pigeons over and over again at Newton Abbot Quay...they grew much much fatter over lockdown! But the most entertaining item of all for my children? Why it's free and they seem to be on the ground everywhere. Yes, sticks were number one! Or in some cases half a tree would be dragged around! Come to my solo show at Harbour House Kingsbridge and see my large scale figurative works. It will no doubt evoke some of your own memories and help you re-connect with your own childhood. The exhibition runs from 28th September - 10th October Monday - Saturday: 10 am - 5 pm Sundays: 10 am - 4 pm Admission free #jaynefarleigh #harbourhousekingsbridge #october21

  • "Journey Through Devon" - October Beach Hut Article

And relax. We made it through the summer season everyone! The tides of tourists are slowly receding, with just gentle waves of late holidaymakers lapping at our shores. We’re looking forward to a peaceful October, welcoming back some of our more local audiences, hopefully with some unseasonably warm Autumn days to enjoy. We’ve got some lovely exhibitions on, but one we’re particularly excited about is Journey Through Devon¸ a show of incredible landscape works from Teignbridge artist Simon Fowler, who during the exhibition, will be inviting visitors to tell him their favourite piece in the show for the chance to take it away absolutely free! The exhibition features a collection of work that Simon has produced since moving to Devon five years ago, during which time he has painted veraciously, inspired by the moorland, coastline and rural idyl that surrounded him. Painting with a representational style, he produces stunning expansive scenes, pushing his colour expression to capture seemingly impossible moments of tone and light that may only be glimpsed for a moment in these constantly changing landscapes. Coming from a family of artists it was at a young age that Simon discovered a passion for drawing, painting and creative endeavour. Starting with oils in his early teens under the instruction of his Grandfather, a prolific and well-established Bristol artist, he benefitted from instruction from a wide array of family members, producing across ceramics, sculpture and woodcarving as well as painting in a variety of mediums. Their experience and knowledge would be invaluable and today Simon is endowed with a significant artistic talent of his own as a result of this early tuition. Now 61, Simon has painted continuously all his life endlessly inspired by the great outdoors where he has spent most of his adulthood. A caver for 35 years on the Mendips and a keen motorcyclist and angler, he has built a connection with the landscape which he now cannot help but express in his work. A further 12 years spent boat building and restoring mostly wooden boats, lead to wood carving and sculpture for a long period. For the past 25 years, after training in forestry, woodland management and horticulture, he now works as a garden designer, offering a new exploration for his creativity on a grand scale. Visitors to the exhibition will have the option to pick from any of the 80 works on display valued up to £2,350. At the end of the exhibition, entries will be drawn at random, and three lucky winners will leave with their favourite work from the show. Journey Through Devon runs from 5th – 17th October at the Artizan Collective Gallery, Fleet Walk. There will be an exhibition launch on 2nd October from 18:00 – 20:00, reservations for which can be made at www.art-hub.co.uk/oct21launch. For more information on the exhibition, visit www.art-hub.co.uk/ex/oct21 #BeachHut #October21 #oct21 #EnglishRiviera #WhatsOn #SimonFowler
