Poison Garden: Healing or Deadly brings together resident and invited artists in a collaborative exhibition rooted in the two-sided nature of flora. Every plant holds the potential to be either a remedy or a poison—equally beautiful or unsettling depending on perspective, proportion, and narrative. Local Roots & Historical Inspiration The theme resonates deeply with Torquay’s heritage. During WWI, Torquay's most famous resident, Agatha Christie, volunteered at the Red Cross Hospital in Torquay Town Hall before working as an apothecary's assistant in the dispensary. Surrounded by glass tinctures, her precise understanding of botanical toxins directly influenced her writing—earning her debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, a rare review in the Pharmaceutical Journal for its accurate depiction of strychnine poisoning. This delicate balance between remedy and ruin is woven right into the Devon landscape: Foxglove: Contains compounds capable of stopping a heart, yet serves as the origin of digoxin, a crucial modern heart medication. English Yew: Lethal alkaloids once tipped Celtic weapons, yet bark compounds later yielded vital chemotherapy treatments. Deadly Nightshade: A staple of crime folklore that provides modern paramedics with atropine to restart failing hearts. "We want to highlight that plants are striking, mysterious, poisonous, and healing—often all at once," the artists explain. "It depends entirely on your perception and approach: the perspective from which you research them, the proportions you choose to emphasize, and the narrative you weave around them." • Hannah Taylor | Artist | Arthub

Delamore Artist Hannah Taylor I love our town and the beauty that can be found in it. Especially in our fabulous gardens. My favourites are - my mums with its abundance of flowers and overflowing shrubs of many shades and textures. Torre Abbey with Agatha's garden telling the secrets of plants and examples found in her books. My works for this project Poison Garden - Healing or Deadly explores darker shades of glaze and shapes inspired by apothecary and Oyla Baklan's watercolour paintings featured in this exhibition. Together along with the other studio artists we tell a story of plants and trees found in our gardens, local heritage sites and the countryside surrounding us. I’m really excited also to invite you to my studio for pottery sessions! It’s a relaxed and vibrant space filled with inspiration, where you can unleash your creativity. Whether you want to try your hand at hand-building with clay or give my potter's wheel a go, there’s something for everyone. My main aim is that everyone has fun and they create something unique and wonderful to take home. ← Previous Artist Next Artist → Stoneware Artizan Collective at Delamore Arts 2026 The Kiln Room Filter Button Filter Button Filter Button Filter Works All Works Filter by Availability Price £ 120 Price Art Sitting by the Pond 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00 Water for the Birds 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00 Walking the Pineapple 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00 Tropical Days 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00 Tropical Days 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00 Palm House Leaves 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00 Creatures in the Strawberries 🎨 Hannah Taylor 🖌️ Stoneware £120.00
