Winter Sea II

The strong tides and rough seas of the Devon and Cornish coastline inspire my work. These large waves at sea and onshore have influence a series of oil paintings started 5 years ago that have amounted to 47 so far. The rivers around Dartmoor and long exposure photographic images of water have influence another series of paintings started recently. I am interested in looking at the way images are altered using this photographic technique and like the idea of taking it to another medium and exploring the results.
Born in Buckinghamshire, I move to Devon 14 years ago and am now based in Teignmouth, Devon. Painting from an early age it wasn't until I reached my mid 30's that I went to art school, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy.
I am a Teignmouth based artist. I am a member of the Devon Artist Network and a-n
Inspired by the slate blue sea in winter. This painting shows a large wave sunlit by a gap in the clouds turning the water pale green. The time of day is key here. It is late in the day, the light is fading fast. The highlights become a mixture of blues and greys contrasting with the deep blue and green shadows in the water. Working in oils suits me best as they are so versatile. This is another in my series of wave paintings which I started 5 years ago and numbering 47.
