Tree of Life
Breda Holden
Growing up in rural Ireland surrounded by wild bogland and wet lowlands has instilled in me a deep connection to the natural world. I strive to convey this in my work. The visual elements of colour, light and atmosphere are my main focus. My paintings aim to express a sense of seeing ‘beyond the usual’, often experienced when immersed in the landscape. I try to create a sense of mystery, removed from the physical reality of the subject. Above all, it is the emotional energy evoked by my interaction with the forces of nature which excites me. The wilds of Dartmoor, the River Dart and the coastline of The South West and Ireland are my inspiration. I am fascinated by how experiencing and observing the landscape and its ever-changing elements connects us to nature and generates a sense of vitality, wonder and wellbeing.
Following a Foundation course in Art and Design at Leicester Polytechnic in 1983, I completed a BA Hons in Interior Design. I worked in residential and commercial design in London and Bath before a move to Totnes, Devon. This move formulated a career change to painting and teaching.
My work is exhibited in local galleries, solo and group shows and open studios throughout Devon and Cornwall. For the past 10 years, alongside painting, I have been teaching workshops in watercolour and mixed media with an emphasis on experimentation and mark making. My studio is based close to the River dart in Totnes, between Dartmoor and the dramatic Devon coast
