I paint not knowing. Whilst nature and the environment are central to inspiration, it’s never a simple or linear progression to the recreation of a scene. Memories and feelings are a part of the process and the work seems to have a life of its own. I need to feel surprised and to have discovered something when it is ‘finished’. I look for energy, light and emotions, rather than simply a visual exactitude. I am always cognisant of the act of the viewer in completing the reading and meaning of any piece.
