The Old Way
Robert Forsyth
I created the work “The Old Way” to encapsulate the unique dynamic of Oldway Mansion and showcase my Digital 3D skills. This continues my passion for creating real world objects from a digital blank canvas. So much so I designed and built an 8ft x 4ft giant CNC router to realise my visions and, Widened my passion for this kind of transformation photogrammetry (3D scanning).
Every element of the composition can be found on, in and around the Iconic local structure. For example, I created an assemblage of digitally re-realised Photogrammetry objects that are representative of Oldway Mansion in a digital space. This includes a scan of a “mirrored” hand sculpted wing I made by taking inspiration from the north side pediment, of the main structure. Furthermore, the border is entirely digitally crafted by hand, taking inspiration from the frame that adorns the painting (A reproduction of the first version of Jacques-Louis David's painting The Crowning of Josephine) above the grand staircase.
To me the fact that this is cut out by machine is important. It is my paintbrush it’s how I express myself and I want the viewer to think about the world around us and how thousands of things that are designed by skilled people with machines like mine. Yet the perceived value is less than a beautiful Baroque handmade ornament, even though the skill level to create either is equivalent. More than anything I hope the audience walks away from looking at this filled with joy from realising how beautiful our local surroundings are. And remembering a fact I find interesting is that if the machine code that cut this out was a straight line it would be over one kilometre long and takes over 10 hours to cut.
