Amanda Seymour

I was born in Paignton Hospital, brought home to No 2 Hollicombe Cottages, or gaswork cottages as we called them, perched on the cliff above Hollicombe Beach, I feel the sea is my natural environment and muse. I call my self a re-artist, having painted excessively and successfully in my teens and early twenties, working as a silk screen designer and printer, a graphic designer and a short flurry of book illustrations, I then stopped painting, only starting again in 2024, just a short 35 year break. I am loving rediscovering painting, relearning techniques and finding my flow when muscle memory seems to take over.

 

I meet weekly with two groups of 'mark makers' where we sit together and paint our own (very diverse) things and encourage. With their support I feel this open and categories are perfect for me to submit some work. Some of the entries are my first water daubings from 2024, some are from this last 3 months as I have been relearning and working on seascapes and reflection. Perfect timing.

Another early work from my re-artist shortlist! Not yet having perfected the skills to paint the piece I want to paint showing the power of the roaring sea and the feeling of being immersed, I have included this piece from early 2025 based on a poem I found that also expresses how I feel as a Reiki practitioner working with universal energy:

 

The moment the water touches the surface, the ripples begin – effortless, natural, unstoppable. That’s how energy moves when you stop trying to control it. The more you hold on, the more resistance you create.

 

But the moment you let go – peace begins to spread. You were never meant to force the flow; you were meant to become it.
