The Forgotten Suffragette
Stephanie Wright
Ordinary is in Extra-ordinary in my worlds, ordinary people who are all extraordinary are visualised and recognised. Place is unrestricted, some of my figures are in an unexpected environment in which the past and the present are juxtaposed in an unexpected way. My figures are an imprint, a moment in time, I try and capture something fleeting and impermanent.
I love the physicality of making a silkscreen print. There is an alchemy in bringing all the ingredients together and making the print. I’m interested in connections...... between people and nature, past and present, imagined and seen. Seeing the beauty and extraordinary nature of the ordinary.
Lillian Lenton was a suffragette from Leicester. She was know as 'the Leicester Pimpernel' because of her capacity to avoid capture by the police. She was imprisioned and suffered. There's a lot more to be said about her but she is one of the many women who are the unknowns of the suffragette movement. Leicester is my home town hence my particular interest in Lillian.
The work is a montage of images representing woman, place and power.
