Fused Glass by Carole Rolfe
Sunspot
Carole Rolfe
Creating sculptural designs in fused glass is truly challenging, being a hazardous and unforgiving medium. I have pushed the boundaries of this art form to discover evermore scintillating effects and forms. Using only clear glass, and inclusions together with my technique the possibilities seem infinite.
This fascinating and elusive material is at once mysterious yet is brought to life by light creating intense magical qualities. It feeds my inspiration and spurs me on. It has been presented to celebrities, televised, and collected. My most involved commission took 3 years. Glass chose me and I am still astonished.
I am a member of the Torbay Guild of Artists.
Designs such as Sunspot are very individual and require back lighting to bring the colour to life. Refraction and reflection of light develop the shimmering perpetual sunshine effect.
Different materials are used in these designs. The reverse appearance in this case is a subtle unusual milky quality, caused by dichroic effects which are created in the chemical reaction and transformation during the firing process. This is a double-sided effect of a different kind, but the shimmering glow has that wow factor.
Glass art always benefits from light falling on it, or through it which transfers wonderful reflections on to the surface on which it is placed.
