Stink Bean Seller
Sarah Jane Johns
In 2021 I lost my husband of 25 years very suddenly to sepsis. Realising the fragility of life, I decided to live more. Facing the terror of losing a regular income, I gave up my clerical job and tried to find happiness. After dabbling with DIY, bouldering and weight lifting I found what was missing. My art. I invested in second hand paints and an easel and started painting. I am finding my style and an interest particularly in the human form and in the beauty of nature. I’m enjoying the creative process in many mediums, working with other artists in their studios, with art groups and in my own front room.
Art has healed me. Allowed me to free my mind and work through the trauma that I hadn't realised was still festering. It has unpacked the grief, let it out and let the joy of art in all its resplendent colours replace the dark. I want to share this discovery with others. Let them know there's hope. I want my art to show them the same joy as I feel in its creation.
Unfinished Piece - Paused 28th January
My depiction of a glorious older lady selling stink beans in a Thai marketplace. I was struck by her cheerful demeanor despite the hard work involved in selling her home grown produce in a bustling and hot environment.
