Texiles and Mixed Media by Alison Whateley

Alison Whateley
I discovered the world of textile art in my mid forties whilst recovering from a period of illness, and was immediately drawn to it. I started experimenting, and what started out as just a hobby soon became much more than that.
Living in Devon my art is inspired by the natural world I see around me, from flora and fauna to rugged moorland and stunning coastline. Whenever I am out in nature there is always plenty that captures my imagination, right down to those small things that many people wouldn’t notice. I use the camera on my phone rather than a sketchbook to record what I see, and have built up quite a collection of material that I refer to when creating.
Influenced by a love of water colour art, but with a passion for textiles, I seek to achieve a softness to my work whilst also incorporating texture. I use up-cycled and vintage textiles where possible for their variety and individuality. I love the idea that these materials can be given a new purpose, and can be appreciated in a totally different way for many more years to come.
Each piece I create is constructed using layers of fabric, stitched together using free motion machine embroidery. I overlay with sheer fabrics to achieve that painterly feel, whilst incorporating texture with thicker fabrics and the addition of mixed media where appropriate. I love to incorporate items such as beads, buttons, nails, washers, wire and beach combing finds to name but a few, all stitched in place by hand .My work continues to evolve as I am constantly inspired to experiment with new techniques and materials. Recent additions to my portfolio include abstract works designed to evoke a sense of place.
