Fiona Campbell
Fiona Campbell is a photographic artist based in Devon. Working with plants that are gathered, grown, found or sometimes already fading, her work explores the botanical world through close observation. Using a distinctive photographic style, she highlights their individuality and imperfection, giving as much attention to damaged leaves, spent flowers and unexpected forms as to specimens at their peak.
Plants are pressed before being photographed, creating two-dimensional impressions rather than conventional botanical portraits. The process takes inspiration from pressed botanical specimens and historic herbarium collections, while using photography to preserve the individual character of each plant.
For Poison Garden, Fiona draws on both her existing botanical archive and newly photographed specimens, bringing together poisonous and harmful plants with plants in states of withering and decay. The work continues her interest in finding beauty in botanical forms that might otherwise be overlooked.
