My Bleeding Heart
As a semi-retired Psychologist, I have a professional interest in people, which is often mirrored in my photography. Masks have fascinated people for thousands of years and they are often perceived as objects of mystery. Furthermore, masks are used in a number of different contexts e.g. Shamanism, in theatre and more commonly at carnivals.
It is the latter and in particular the Venice Carnival with it’s unique history of mystery, excess and intrigue that this image and my other two images focuses on.
My photographic interpretation of the carnival aims to illustrate the more mysterious and darker aspects of the human psyche portrayed by the masked figures of Venice. I have deliberately used bold, saturated colours to enhance this visual drama. Moreover, my moving the camera at the time of exposure a darker, altered reality reveals itself.
