Mind Your Own Tits
Matilda Macmillan
Matilda Macmillan is a figurative artist and mother based in South Devon. She has a special interest in capturing the body at times of transformation and transition. She is passionate about making art about the shifts in pregnancy and matrescence, challenging social norms around parenting and channelling rage from unsolicited parenting advice into artwork.
Matilda believes boxes are for things, not people and enjoys flexing her creative muscles across different media, working in oil paint, gouache, photography, collage and linoprint.
Her work was most recently shown in the Royal West of England Academy's 172nd Annual Open Exhibition.
This painting is about breastfeeding beyond infancy (my daughter was 2 and a half in the reference photo) and features unsolicited comments that women breastfeeding toddlers and children have received and kindly shared with me. All of these comments were said directly to a breastfeeding mother (or her child) and this painting is about misogyny and the control and sexualisation of women's bodies. I respect every parent's individual choice to feed their baby/ child however they prefer and works best for their family.
