Making Tracks
Sue Tinkler
Having originally trained as a graphic designer, glass has become my second career. I have developed my skills by attending numerous masterclasses with a wide range of artists using both glass and other media such as enamelling, pewter and painting. I mix and match techniques I have learned and combine them with graphic design processes such lino printing, ceramic transfers, and silk screen printing. I include these with a wide range of kiln-formed glass processes such as casting, fusing, and slumping. I especially enjoy turning flat pieces into 3D forms though controlled ‘warm’ slumping processes such as ‘drop outs’.
I am inspired by the textures found in our industrial heritage and working landscapes, in particular, working fishing harbours and the dairy farm that surrounds my Winchester studio. Textures created by nature reclaiming often feature in my work, for example, rusting equipment, corrugated metal, chicken wire, fishing nets, ropes, lobsterpots, and peeling paint. I recently sold my vessel “Memories of Harris” at the 2022 British Glass Biennale.
This curved shape can be displayed either on its edge or back. Inspired by walking routes close to home.
