Long Stories, Untold
Mark Jessett
Mark Jessett is a painter working on paper, rarely using brushes. Overlaying paint in very fine films, his work explores relationships between colour, surface texture, translucency and opacity. He feels that paper has an accessibility that makes it preferable to canvas, and that it needn’t be treated as delicate or considered restrictive to scale or ambition.
Mark’s work is imbued with the flavour of magical imagery, folkloric artefacts and representations of the esoteric. He hopes for his paintings to reflect the innocent sense of immersion and the intoxicating atmosphere of an engaging story.
Begun in 2020, the Rock theme stems from earlier abstract explorations of mineral-like forms, but is searching for greater simplicity and a clearer celebration of the relationship between the paint and the paper’s surface. With a new-found willingness to let recognisable forms appear in the work, these paintings give voice to an innate longing for the fanciful and fantastic, coupled with Mark’s rediscovered, and strengthening, relationship with nature.
Mark makes his work believing that Art is evidence that humankind is not entirely, irredeemably awful. His paintings are a barricade of optimism and delight against the more dreadful aspects of humanity today.
