After some initial training to be an architect, Douglas went into industrial and interior design for the Dunlop Group of Companies.
Later spent six years running the marketing, display and graphics for the Prestigious Modern Interior Store (Heal's) in London.
From here he was head-hunted to be managing director of Dartington Cider Press between 1978-1984, the period of its most acclaimed time.
From 1984-1990 he designed hotels, restaurants and pubs/nightclubs in London.
