Last Day of Autumn
Alison Witchell
As a child reading and drawing were my favourite pastimes. I could lose myself in a world of words created by others and, I could spend countless happy hours creating my own colourful little world. My ambition was to study art, my parents however, had other ideas so Nursing became my lifelong career instead. Juggling a demanding job with raising a family I dipped in and out of the creative arts and it was many years later that I could finally give the time to my creativity that had lain dormant for so long. The twist of fate was a prolonged and serious depressive illness that happened to come my way. During my recovery, my sanity was nurtured back to health by opportunities offered to me in the form of Art Therapy and the chance to attend a weekly art group for folks like myself recovering from being hit by the juggernaut of mental ill health.
Slowly my equilibrium and pleasure in living has repaired through losing myself in applying colour and texture to paper. Living in East Devon, inspiration for my work comes from my utter joy of being in the natural world and especially the way that light influences all that we see around us. Shapes, shadows and contrast in our natural landscapes are reflected in our inner landscapes that fluctuate with time. Sharing my creativity with others both in a practical and personal way continues to be one of life’s greatest pleasures.
