Mason Johnstone is a Devon Based Artist who focuses on Fashion Design and Digital Art.
Art, Fashion and Design should be representative; representative of what the artist feels, thinks, believes and experiences are all a big part of the process of creation, thus should be involved in most steps when it comes to designing. Pieces I create typically end up being big scale with powerful, strong and passionate meanings behind them, often inspired by Humanity, Relationships, and personal interests such as Visual Novels, Music and Popular Media. For example, in my Portfolio I showcase a deck of cards I have created based off Emotional Abuse, and as a victim of emotional abuse and manipulation, believe it is important that it is brought up in conversation and talked about to avoid more people falling victim to it, as well as a dress based off Music and its connection to Memories with many layered pieces to reference the different layers that songs inhabit as well as memories often blending into each other when people struggle with their memory, something that I personally struggle with. I try to create pieces that will make people stop and stare, forcing them to dig down and really think about what they're looking at.
When it comes to fashion, these ideals continue through my creation process. Designing garments and creating them are both relaxing and exciting for me. Watching myself turn a sketch into a real-life piece through patterns, fabric, machine work, buttons, zippers, etc, has such a gratifying feeling once everything is complete. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to details, often unhappy until a piece has reached its fullest potential. I create garments that typically do not fit the usual casualness of fashion that the everyday person wears. Ballgowns, cloaks that reach the floor and Lolita inspired fashion are some examples of pieces I have created that are more likely to be seen in places like runway shows or galleries than in retail or be seen as streetwear.
Often taking references from History and Humanity, a lot of the garments I create, and design have strong characteristics to them. I often find myself leaning into how things look in comparison to the entire piece. Subconsciously making everything fit where it needs to, both in character design and graphic design, often means my two niches blend. I think deeply about the characters I create, such as what fabric pattern would they be? What is their definite scent? What are their motives? Do they prefer practicality over aesthetics? These go well into my graphic design work, as I often end up layering patterns and colours to create depth and contrast between light and shadows.
In the future, I do believe I can combine Fashion Design and Graphic Design through many means. Creating unique patterns for specific garments, creating posters, films, artworks about the fashion I create, using real world textures such as stone, wood, plants and leaves in my work, either on actual fabric or on editing software.
