Earthenware Ceramic Mosaic by Michelle Greenwood Brown
Hedgerow
Michelle Greenwood Brown
Michelle Greenwood-Brown is a professional ceramicist based in Teignmouth. After completing a degree in painting and printmaking she was drawn to traditional mosaic, mastering various techniques. For the last ten years Michelle has worked with clay, finding artistic freedom and an opportunity to utilise her painting skills. Through observation of nature and experimentation she has developed her own distinctive style, making her pieces from a mixture of sprigs, carved clay and imprints from organic forms. Once Michelle has made all the individual pieces the process of bringing them together takes many hours. She aims to achieve a balanced, but natural appearing composition, capturing the wildness of tangled undergrowth. The finished artwork will reflect the season in which it was made and the wild birds encountered in her garden or on walks in the woods. The majority of her work is wall-based, but she has completed several outdoor public art commissions.
'Hedgerow' is a wall hung, circular earthenware ceramic mosaic, made to be displayed indoors. The inspiration comes from a passion for observing birds going about their lives in the trees and undergrowth, in the garden and when walking in the woods.
