Tara Hughes-Law is an emerging contemporary artist who lives in Brixham, Devon. From as early as I can remember I found inner sanctuary through drawing; I used this as a way to isolate myself away from my family’s challenges. Which has formed a great bases for me to continue as an emerging contemporary artist. In addition to my drawing, as a child I learnt traditional ballet however even at a young age I found the ridged structure of ballet didn’t fit my need to be able to freely express myself.
Following a period of contemporary dance during which I spent a summer studying at Trinity Laban, London, I found I needed to explore my expression further. That’s when Argentine Tango found me. As an improvisation dance for the first time, I found a way to express myself freely and uninhibited this formed a base where I fully connected with my art and the expression of self.
From this point I formed a successful career performing, teaching, creating festivals and events which took my all over the world. For the last two years I have been exploring self-discovery and self-expression through my art on my foundation degree in practising contemporary art. My work during this period has been focused around myself, my journey and the painful path of domestic abuse and its affects that ripple out into every part of one’s life.
Through this work I have reignited ways of expression and liberated freedom and confidence. I also have a love for conservation and the environment and last year I collaborated with a local conservation group set up, organised, and curated an art exhibition and launch event. This involved personally selected works from over 30 artists from the southwest and was attended by over 150 people. I hosted the event and brought together conservation and art to engage, inspire and educate people on local coastal habitats and species. The event was a huge success, and The Cove Project continues to build on what I created that day.
