Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Coomber
From Grandfather's Back Door
Tom Coomber
I am autistic and dyspraxic, and I find it hard to communicate how I see the world through written or spoken words. However, painting presents a direct line between my eyes to my brain, with the additional nerve endings that we neurodivergents have, through to my arm, hands, fingers, brush, paint and canvas.
My vision is brighter and more chaotic I am told than that which neurotypicals experience (how do you tolerate it?), and I am told more beautiful, inviting people to stop and stare and absorb life as I experience it. Acrylic paints pack a colour punch that reflects the colour intensity I experience on a daily basis whether in the rural landscape of Suffolk, the busy urban life of a town or the exposed and extreme visions of the sea and other bodies of water. I am interested in developing the use of oils without surrendering to their tendency to become muddied, blunted pools of colours.
My work is made of expressive and gestural brushstrokes reflecting and inspired by the world around me, and to which I invite you.
