First Light on the Water

From Analogue to Abstract

Alan's work is informed by the natural environment, and ranges from the figurative to the abstract.  His figurative work tends towards an expressionistic interpretation of the landscapes of the South West Peninsula and the Balearic Islands in particular.  Many of his paintings engage with the impact of light on water, whilst another recurring theme is the contre jour exploration of sunlight through trees.

His abstract paintings largely take their influence from the light, landscape and art of Cornwall.  Imagined aerial perspectives of geographical features are intermingled with horizontal and vertical imagery to capture the essence of the area.   The forms occasionally borrow from the sculptures of Hepworth and the forms of Terry Frost, whilst the inter-acting of alternative viewpoints owes a debt to Cubism in general.
