Coastal Elements I

My paintings are personal responses to the surrounding landscape. Paintings are created through collaging ideas from observational drawings and photographs, and a sense of my own experience. The landscape around me holds colours, forms, sounds and movements that act as a catalyst for painterly interpretation.

I work mainly with Acrylic and Emulsion paint with charcoal and graphite elements depicting the South West coast, in particular; Teignmouth, Shaldon, Topsham, St Ives, Falmouth and Lyme Regis.

I usually work on handmade square fame canvases. Onto these I float abstract forms, a steady balance of colour and energetic mark making to give a sense of space and to capture the dynamic environment that highlights details such as; the coastline, textural terrains, cliff edges, rocks and horizon lines.

I have now finished my first year studying BA(Hons) Fine Art at Falmouth University where I have explored Abstract Art in the contemporary context with landscape as my main source of inspiration.

Abstract painting highlights to me the importance of creating art, the relationship between the artist and the paintbrush, the act of craft, that stands significantly in our 'screencentric' world. The enjoyment in painting and interaction with the paint has great meaning behind my work.
