Past Exhibition Coastal Villages A regular exhibitor with Artizan, this will be Philip’s first solo show and we are delighted to be curating and hosting it for him in our Courtyard Gallery. Philip Eley is a naive artist living in Paignton, Devon. He works as an emotional health specialist, helping teenagers find emotional balance. At the start of 2021 Philip committed to doing a painting a day for 365 days. Although he has been developing his unique style over many years, the discipline of painting every day has transformed his work. Over these months he has found a freedom and vibrancy that he had always looked for. But liveliness is only one side of Philip’s work,’ I am always striving to balance this with a sense of peace and serenity. This balance is key to my work’. Philip’s Grandmother was a master of Ikebana, (Japanese Flower arranging) and he grew up surrounded by her work. Without deliberately following the exact specifications of Ikebana, some of the underlying principles do inform his vision, and particularly this satisfying blend of calm and chaos. Sometimes the chaos is outside, through the window, while the calmness is inside within the still life. Sometimes the chaos is in the under-painting, while the calm is in the surface. Sometimes the chaos is in the warm colours while the calm is in the cold colours. Sometimes the chaos is in the gaps, while the calm is in the shapes. The gaps between things are as important as the forms, this is another principle of Ikebana. Another principle is elevating the ordinary. The star of the painting might be a simple beach pebble, or a humble fisherman’s cottage. If flowers are present, they are simple field flowers. Nothing is showy, but everything is important. Philip’s paintings are silent worlds, where nothing is over-worked. Things have to find their form quickly and in as few lines as possible. He generally uses a restricted colour palette, but the bright pops of colour are carefully chosen. Artist Mary Gillett Mary Gillett is a printmaker captivated by the tactile and rhythmic process of traditional etching. She celebrates the ancient reliability of the etching press, finding joy in the moment of reveal when damp paper lifts from the inked plate. For Mary, the time-intensive nature of etching provides space for contemplation and imbues the process with unique eloquence. Her plates, often appearing eroded by natural forces, are furrowed, corroded, and scraped to reflect the landscapes that inspire her. Interweaving alchemical processes with symbolic layers, Mary explores overwhelming emotions through her work. Described as “powerful, uncompromising landscapes” with a “stern lyricism that speaks beyond place and season,” her prints convey the raw beauty and enduring presence of the natural world, resonating deeply with viewers. ← Previous Artist Next Artist → Filter Button Exhibiting Now 21 Journeys Studio Artist Exhibition Record 21 Journeys Formed in 1967, the 21 Group of Artists is now one of the longest established groups of exhibiting professional artists in the South West. The group invites its members to produce high quality work that recognises the intelligence of the hand and the embodied wisdom born out of physical making (such as painting, drawing, printmaking) as a means to establish a robust, experiential, and authentic art practice. The group seeks to evolve and disseminate this counter culture through exhibition and discussion. In order to foster this, and to preserve the opportunity for creative dialogue between its members, it still limits its membership to a maximum of 21 artists. The group aims to mount two or three exhibitions a year, usually held within the South West region. "My paintings and drawings are a response to my surroundings and my place within them." Artist Clare Jenkinson Clare has a background in textiles - specializing in carpet design for her B.A. - and began her career based in Kidderminster at the heart of the carpet industry. She now divides her time between designing for manufacturers and working as a fine artist. Always having had a love of drawing, Clare went on to study botanical illustration at Birmingham University, founding the Birmingham Society of Botanical Artists with fellow students. The discipline of observational drawing underlies and informs both her design work and painting. Recent exhibitions include ‘Botanical Inspirations’ at Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter in May 2016, the South West Academy Open at Exeter Castle in September 2016, 'The Power of Three' at Artizan Gallery in August 2017, ‘Tor to Shore’ at Birdwood House in Totnes,August 2018, and ‘Land of the Three’ at Pavilions, Teignmouth, 2019. With over 100 participating artists and 300 works, on December 2nd, this needs to be the first stop on your Christmas shopping trips. This huge collection including one-off original artworks, highly collectible sculpture and unique gifts has something for everyone, whether you're looking small for a stocking filler, or going big for a Christmas treat to yourself. Opening hours have been extended to make the most of the final weeks before Christmas so you'll be able to join us seven days a week from 10am every day, and to celebrate the first week we'll also be offering you the chance to book exclusive preview sessions with us. These sessions are by reservation only and are a chance to enjoy the exhibition at a quieter pace with access to the gallery directors and visiting artists. A limited number of tickets are available per session to meet COVID-Secure restrictions and we ask that all attendees wear a mask as per requirements when visiting a retail outlet.
