Artist David Holley After a long career in teaching art, David in retirement has rekindled his interest in ceramics. These stoneware Deity Jars are inspired by African fetish statues, thought to possess magical powers and protect from evil spirits. The jars are individually hand thrown, modelled, decorated and glazed making each one unique. Through these stoneware creations, David combines his artistic expertise with cultural inspiration, crafting pieces that are both evocative and distinctive. David holds a Ceramics Degree from Central School of Art and Design, London in the 1970's. ← Previous Artist Next Artist → Filter Button Exhibiting Now Heading 2 Studio Artist Exhibition Record English Riviera Summer Open 2025 Now in its tenth year, the English Riviera Summer Open returns for another vibrant celebration of contemporary visual art from across the UK. Hosted by Artizan Collective CIC in their central Torquay gallery, the exhibition transforms the walls of this much-loved cultural space into a rich, salon-style showcase of original work, selected through open submission. This year’s show promises a dynamic mix of emerging and established artists, with a wide range of media, styles, and voices. Expect painting, printmaking, photography, textiles, sculpture, and more, all curated with an emphasis on quality, originality, and diversity. With all works for sale and new pieces regularly rotated in, it’s the perfect destination for collectors, browsers, and art lovers alike. Proceeds from the exhibition will support Artizan's future development projects. Our Summer Open is now a well-established event on our annual calendar having originally started purely by chance a decade ago. Each year the event sees us build on previous shows as we welcome established and emerging artists working in many rich and diverse mediums and styles to Torbay for our personal homage to the great institution that is the Royal Academy Summer Show. Starting at the end of June and running through until late August, the exhibition promises to be as rich and diverse as in previous years. Past Exhibition Artizan Bursary Programme - 2022 Exhibitions With all fingers, toes and extremities crossed, we hope that 2022 will be our first fully uninterrupted year since 2018. And as such, we are looking to celebrate a return to our usual programming with a year of Bursary Exhibitions at Artizan. Rather than taking bookings for the year ahead, we’ll be expanding our Bursary programme with a range of fully and partially funded opportunities, and curating a year of activity based on the submissions we receive to this opportunity. This will include a range of exhibition bursaries, from full 100% fee bursaries across all of our spaces, to online curated showcases with our partners at Artsy.net There are up to 30 opportunities available for solo, group and virtual shows and this will be the primary route through which we programme for the year ahead. Artist Stewart Taylor In 2020, Stewart began making monoprints of pollarded lime trees outside his London flat. One tree became a street, then an entire neighbourhood - each print revealing something about our often-overlooked relationship with urban ecology. After relocating to Devon, his focus expanded to trees shaped by climate and human intervention: ash threatened by disease, fire-scarred Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert, and the lichen-draped oaks of Dartmoor's edges. His larger pieces are composite Gelliplate monoprints, created through masking, stencils, and layered textures. Recently, time-limited, 15-minute studies have been made in response to the energy and flux of temperate rainforests. These prints subsequently raised over £1000 for the local charity, Moor Trees. Stewart’s gelliplate techniques were featured in Printmaking Today (Summer 2024). Our ongoing collaboration with Delamore Arts allows us to extend this mission, bringing the very best of regional and national creativity to one of the most prestigious events on the South West arts calendar. Delamore Artist Edward King Edward King is a Plymouth-based ceramic artist specializing in stoneware clay. Renowned for his innovative glazing techniques, Edward incorporates raw materials such as sand and slate to create reactive and glossy finishes that bring a distinctive character to his work. Influenced by his extensive travels across the Caucasus and Eastern Europe, Edward’s art reflects a fascination with abandoned spaces, brutalist design, and Soviet architecture, particularly the ways in which we interact with structures that have lost their social or political purpose. Since beginning his ceramics journey in 2019, Edward has exhibited at prestigious events including London Design Week 2023, Art in Clay Farnham, Hever Castle, and Celebrating Ceramics in Oxford. His work is held in private collections across Europe and the UK, and in 2024, he showcased his talent on Channel 4’s Pottery Throw Down. "My work reflects a journey that navigates the plausibility that E66 is still out there, transforming herself into different tributaries. " Artist Anthony Barclay From an early age Anthony had a fascination with boats, inheriting his father's fondness for them, particularly the old clinkers. As a small boy, growing up by the waterline Anthony's passion grew, spending most of his life around the sea, he played in, around and under them. His return to the River Exe provided not just a deeper connection to the estuarine waters, it became the motivation to search for the forgotten pieces of his father's wooden clinker boat, E66. Anthony was compelled to investigate this evocative calling, rather like the sound of the sirens calling fishermen in the vast ocean. Over the last 3 years his search has taken him to the shores of South West England and more recently to the Scilly Isles. These recollections have fostered a series of determined, emotive responses, collecting and collating a body of work that is evolving with eternal possibility. His work reflects a journey that navigates the plausibility that E66 is still out there, transforming herself into different tributaries. Pushing himself to the limit, almost possessed, his curiosity has carried him into dangerous voids. Often treacherous, sometimes isolating, camping out on rocky outcrops waiting for the tides or storms to subside. Searching precariously for offerings. Occasionally, the harvested objects present a map of the journey undertaken. Responding to what is relinquished, he works with considered judgement, able to stand back and support them. 'Bits of wood will do that, create locality like a map.' He says. Anthony searches for wood empathetic to an era. 'Things were done differently then,' he says, 'these old traditional wooden boats had more character' Naturally, over time these boats have broken up or perished, like E66. Aware that he is dealing with a small window of inevitable decay, he is eager to preserve the wooden bones of these assiduous historical boats. However, it was a simple lead patch that became the inspired narrative catalyst for this unique body of work. Once the preserve of a vessel it now morphs back naturally into a vessel of its own. Enriching and embellishing the narrative. The lead boat's navigational intention is revealed to him further, providing a safe harbour or a lure. It sits within the found materials like a diorama. Working with found objects is a preoccupation of many artists, yet Anthony's loyal process is almost photographic, working mostly with a monochrome palette, the tessellation of black and white capturing a moment in time before it disappears. Black pitch, with it's undeniable evocative aroma becomes the fabric of each piece. Its rich, dark, syrupy intensity is immediately transportive. It's the sense of journey that manifests.
