Widecombe In The Moor, Dartmoor
Helen White
I work in linocut and screen, creating prints of Dartmoor and surrounding area and am inspired by the variety of character in the landscape. I work dramatic elements and landmarks together into impressions to capture a spirit of the place in my images.
I screen print blocks of colour - overlaying them and allowing the screens to misalign, to build colour with depth and interest and produce active, lively edges and lines. The colour prints are then overprinted with the linocut plate using a black Japanese sumi ink. I primarily use a scalpel knife to cut the lino which adds clarity to the lines of the image by decluttering it and lines, texture and patterns emerge. The ink is glossy and textural in contrast to the flat matt colour below. It has an element of resist to the lino surface when printed and so takes on its own character that creates expressive lines and marks to complete the work.
