Stoneware by Fiona Thompson
Vase from Porto Series
Fiona Thompson
Fiona established her practice in the 1990s after graduating from Edinburgh College of Art, returning to study in 2006 for a research degree at the University of Sunderland. She has exhibited widely, taken part in residencies, collaborative projects and written for publication. Her work is handbuilt, usually coil or slab built, with multiple layers of surface imagery built up in stages. Inspiration is drawn from a variety of sources, including museum display and tourism.
Her nonfunctional vessels explore themes such as nostalgia, memory and commemoration, and often incorporate drawn, printed and photographic imagery. Recent work is inspired by a trip to Portugal, also informed by previous research into tourism. The vases are a form of personal souvenir. They reflect how we visually consume everything as a visitor, what we choose to see and not see. Minute details are important, as well as the broader view of a place.
