The Path We Follow
Cathryn Shilling
After a career as a Graphic Designer, a move to the USA prompted me to pursue a new creative direction. I studied the art and craft of Stained Glass in Connecticut and then on my return to London I began studying and working with both Kiln formed glass and Blown glass. In 2009 I set up my own professional practice. In 2010 I joined the team at London Glassblowing as Curator.
Kiln formed glass is the perfect medium for my work. It gives me the creative and technical freedom to produce tactile, tangible and enduring pieces that explore the sculptural quality of glass. Hot Glass however allows me to investigate and work in a more immediate and direct way with my chosen material, drawing inspiration from its molten state in order to produce unique and tactile vessels.
The rise of temperature change across Europe using observed data can be visualised in more than one way, however there is no doubt that we are following a dangerous path.
These vessels represent an assembly of European nations, each displaying their own rise in temperature change over 80 years.
It is only by taking action now and working together that we can follow a new temperature path to a sustainable future.
These pieces are created using actual data shown as stripes of colour devised by Professor Ed Hawkins of Reading University. The warming stripes graphics have been created to start conversations about our warming world and the risks of climate change. Each Vessel represents the change in climate of a particular European Country over the last 80 years.
These pieces are made using the roll-up technique, an adaptation of a Venetian method used by glass blowers for centuries. The vessels are made from pre-fused Bullseye Glass tiles that are then picked up hot, rolled up and hand blown.
