Spotting the Rapeseed from Dunster Beach
Gabrielle Peckham
I make landscape and botanical paintings, often En plein air in a variety of mediums using oils, acrylics, watercolour, and water soluble wax pastel.
What I'm drawn to initially is colour, light and interesting shapes in nature. But more specifically is the the feeling you get when peeking through to a scene that's naturally framed by looking beyond what's in the foreground, nosing beyond a bush, or noticing the play of light reflecting on or through something. I enjoy showing how beautiful flowers are when they're dying. When the colours melt, often becoming more translucent, the shapes contort into something new and unexpected.
I hope people will take away a childlike wonder and a sense of magic in nature from seeing my work. Like a scene from a fairy-tale.
The bright yellow Rapeseed field in the landscape in a sunny day in North Somerset took my attention away from the more obvious sea view. Painted in 4-5 hours En plain air.
