Shirley Fleming
Hand building large forms in stoneware is Shirley’s ideal, always trying new ways to create pieces that will fit in the kiln for the various firings but are then built up into much larger works such as her NightWatcher and Sentinel series.
Pure shape is always the draw and she returns again and again to the Pierced Form. Feeling her way into the perfect curve and finding that balancing point as the piece gradually evolves is magical.
Relying in the past mainly on subtle washes of oxides, Shirley is increasingly experimenting with various slips, stains, and glazes.
Firing is extremely unpredictable, often the hoped for effect doesn’t appear and can ruin a piece after many hours of work, but sometimes ……, something wonderful happens.
