Salvator Monday (after Leonardo)
Anna Grayson
I work in a variety of media, including drawing and printmaking, but have become best known for my photopastiches – re-imaginings of famous works of art. These combine favourite iconic old masters with a contemporary and orginal piece of work.
I started my adult life as a geologist, which was tough as a woman so I moved into broadcasting and publishing. I won awards and became the first woman to present a Natural World on BB2. I use the same continuous lighting techniques that I used in film for my photography. I moved to fine art in 2012-14 and have had five of my pictures hung in the Royal Academy, many more in SWAc and two in the Royal West of England in Bristol. My work has found its way into private collectons around the world.
This picture came about when celebrated Devon writer Ian Mortimer phoned me up and said “Oliver's grown his hair. He looks just like Jesus, you'd better come round.” Which I did, and the rest is history...
Salvator Monday (After Leonardo) is so named because so many of us crave salvation on a Monday Morning! The original Leonardo, Salvator Mundi, was rediscovered a few years ago but is sadly no longer on private view but in a vault in the middle East. I thought I should put that right as great art should be seen by all! It is 44x34 cm and in a plain gilt recycled frame so it can be cheaper. A lot cheaper - £195. I've had cards printed and I shall use some of them for my own Christmas cards this year.
